CHARGE OF STEALING WHISKEY Wellington, May 18. Two employees in the kitchen of the Empire Hotel have baen arrested on a charge of stealing alcohol valued at £8 from a store-room. They had packed whiskey etc., in a portmanteau, and were about to remove it, when they were detected. They were remanded. FIRE IN WELLINGTON. Wellington, May 14. A fire broke out this afternoon in tho Wellington Biscuit Company's brick buildings in Farish-stveet. The upper portion was gutted and the stock badly damaged. The latter was insured for £500 in the Royal Exchange and £200 in the Phoenix. THE BiRQUE COROMANDEL. CAPTAIN RUSSELL AT PAHIATUA Pahiatua, May 14. Captain Russell addressed a crowded meeting heie last evening. He expressed his disbelief in the existence of a true surplus, and declared it was made up by the balance from last year, which the Government called revenue. They had also included the sinking fund set aside under the Loans to Local Bodies Act, debentures, and small sums from other sources. He predicted that investigation would show that during last year the expenditure exceeded the revenue by £232,277, A vote of thanks wag carried)
