BAND OF HOPE PICNIC. THIS DAY.

The Band of Hope Picnic, the event of the year which is of moat interest to the children, was hold at Glenavon, on the bank of the Waiwakaiho River on Thurs day. The picnic ground y used to bo at Bell Block, but on account of the paddock there not being available this year, the Committee got leave" from Mr M. Hopson to hold the picnic on the Glenavon estate. The children assembled at St. Mary's Bchoolroom at 11 o'clock, and wore formed into line by His Worship the Mayor, Rev. A. English, Mr Howell, and Mrs Collia. The procession, headed by the Temperance Band (under Bandmaster E. Howell) then marched down Vivian-street, into Robe-street, thence in Powderham street, thence into Devon-street by way of Silver-street, and finally along Broughamstreet to the railway station. The procession this year could not as regards numbers compare with former years, there being on this occasion not more than 200 children marching. The reason for the diminution in number is probably "la grippe." The [first train conveying the children •to the picnic, ground left at 12 o'clock;.and trains afterwards loft at 1.15 and 2.15 p.m., which were patronised by a large number of adults. As the wt ather was beautifully fino^a really pleasant day was spent by the picnicers, who returned to town in the evening thoroughly satisfied with the day's outing. The Temperance Band played several selections on the ground, and thereby considerably onlirened the proceedings. Mr J. West catered for the picmc, and as usual gave complete satisfaction. Mr C. E. Bellringer worked most assiduously in carrying out the arrangements for the I picnic.
