Tenders are invited for the supply of rations, fuel, &c, to the local gaol. I It has been suggested in a letter in this issue that the Agricultural Society Committee should engage the services of the Band for Thursday next (Show day). The suggestion is a good one, and ought to be acted on by the Committee. •With reference to a letter which ap peared in yesterday's issue, to the effect that ' owners of property in town who had trees, the branches of which were overhanging the footpath, had had notices sent to them to cut them down, we are told that the I writer must have been wrongly informed, for no instructions of the kind have been issued •by the Borough authorites. It appears that several complaints have been made to the Foreman of Works that in some of the most frequented streets the«c are trees with the branches ' hanging over footpaths so low that ladies with parasols up cannot walk under thorn. Tho owners of the trees have been asked to cut one or two of these branches, and that was all. We are reminded of the coming season by reading an advertisemont found in another coluinu from Mr W. Walton* drawing attention to the arrival of his choice new fruits, &c. The Valenera raisins are really good, being almost equal to muscatels. An inmate of the Old Men's Refuge will appeal in Court on Monday nest to answer a charge of assaulting a member of the same institution. White & Carter have just received their new season's fruit, specially bought for the requirements of their Christmas trade. Also a well-assorted stock of other seasonable goods are now on view and for sale, which the public will do well to inspect. The High School Sports, which were held in tho school grounds to-day, weve a great suocess, and wore witneEsed by a large number of parents and friends of the pupils. The usual meeting of the High School Board of Governors lapsed for want of a quorum on Wednesday morning. The Executive, however, have decided that the breaking up ceremony in connection with the school shall take place on Friday, December 18 ; that Judge Kettlo be a#kcd to preside on that occasion ; that £5 be voted for prizes ; and £2 for tho spors. The colt by Nordenfelt— Frailty, foaled At Wellington Park a few days ogo, died on Sunday. M The death of the late Mr T. W. lawU, of the Native Office, was, it was said, brought about in the following manner :— "He got wet through in the rain while watching the race in which Bridson won the sculling championship of Victoria. He went to Sydney the same night, and, being unable to obtain a sleeping berth, remained in his clothes, which had not been thoroughly dried, and tho chill thus caught developed into congestion of the luags. Ho died on tho Sunday and was . buried at 8 o'clock next morning — so j quickly that them was no time to intunato the wish to have his remeins sent to New Zealand.
