POPULATION OF THE CITIES;
Wellington, May 21. * A comparison has been drawn out by the Census Department of the population of the chief cities and suburbs, which may be property counted as belonging to theih, showing the difference between this and last enumeration: This shows as follows :— Auckland, now 52,432, against 57,048 ; Wellington, now 33,138> against 27,833 (this does not include 1,982 on board ship) ; Dunedin, 45,829, against. 45,518 ; Invercargill, '7,999, against -8,939 ; Napier, 8,435, against 7,680 ; Nelson, 6,675, against '7,815. The return for Christchurch has not yet been received.
A ■ striking feature shown by the recent enumeration is that in every place except Mapier the females are in excess of males. In Dunedin this excess is no less than 2,245.'
