GOVERNMENT RETRENCHMENT
JUSTICE DEPARTMENT. NO SAVING IN EDUCATION DEPARTMENT. | PER PEESS ASSOCIATION, | Wellington, April 22. — The alteration in the Justice Department includes placing the District Courts in the South Igland \ under one Judge, instead of two. The socond Judge will be employed in another capacity. Thoro will be some ro-arrange-nienfc and one or two reductions in the magistracy. The total saving in salaries will be £3000; about £2000 will be saved on extraneous expenses. The Ministry believo still further savings can eveutually be made, without dismissing or reducing anyone. There will be no retrenchment in education, but by the exercise of prudence it is hoped to keep the vote under last year's, after allowing for the annual increase of children The expenditure on native schools will be kept within limits, and the Minister proposes to introduce a bill giving the Education Department power to hand these schools over to Education Boards from time to time, on such terms as may be agreed upon. The Minister considers the time has arrived when the Maoris have a right to make reserves for their schools as the Europeans have done. Judge Ward will have charge of the District Courts in the South Island. Judge Broad's services will be retained in other capacities in the Nelson district.
