FIRE IM WELLINGTON. Wellington, March 27. A store in Adelaide Road, owned by C. Briggs, and in tho occupation of C. Brown, draper, was burnt down early this morning. The building was insured for £50 in the National ; the stock for £250 in the South British ; furniture for £100 in the Northern. Miss Roaney's millinery shop adjoining was gutted ; insured for £75 in the Norwich Union. MAN RTABS HIS WIFE. A man named Charles Cunningham, a naxniili laborer, was arrested lust night, and charged with stabbing his wife. Ho inflicted a rather severe wound on her head, but the doctor doos not think it will prove fatal. DESTRUCTIVE FIRIC AT HOKITIKA. Hokitika, March 27. A destructive fire occurred in Rcvcllstreot this morning. By the time the fiiebcll gave the alarm the fire had obtained a good hold of the Duke of Edinburgh Theatre, and in spito of nil efforts of the brigade, rapidly spread to other buildings in tho block, and, fanned by a land breeze, crossed the street, destroying Schef's upholsterer's shop and Sargison's bakery. The Club Hotel was saved, though considerably damaged, as was Hawkin's bakery. The buildings destroyed were : The Theatre, Levy's store, Westland Hotel, Pollocks (tobacconist), Ogilvie's stables, and a house of three rooms which was unoccupied, as well as the cottages of Schefs, upholsters, and Sargison, baker. Insurances and origin unknown. SUPPLYING DRINKS TO TRAVELLER. Christchurch, March 27. The licensee of "Al Hotel " was charged yesterday at the R.M. Court with Sunday selling. It was proved that some person hail drinks in the bar on Sunday last, they having heen invited in by a man from Lyttelfcon, who was held to be a traveller. Mr Stringer, for tho accused, contended that travellers had a right to take another person into an hotel to treat him to liquor on Sundays. The Bench upheld tho contention, and dismissed the case.
