DESECRATION OF THE DEAD.

A PORCINE SLAUGHTER AT PARIHAKA.

ONBof theprincipal features of theParihaka settlement has been obliterated by tne hand of man — in this case a black man. The feature referred to was the tribe of pigs owned by the Maoris that one would suppose had carte blanche in roaming about the settlement, but it seemed they had not, for through trespassing they met their fate. This is the story :— -Some time last week some of the pigs of the place — it was never found out which particular ones — got into the Maori burial ground, and rooted up some bodies. This act sealed the fate of the whole porcine tribe, as not being able to tell which ones aad done the aot, Te Whiti's mandate was issued to the effect that all the pigs should be killed, to make sore. The command was obeyed, and the animals were brained. A pig is a curiosity in Parihaka now on acoount of the slaughter.
