Gairlooh discharged a cargo of sheep, when a train which was on the wharf at the time ran through the flock, killing and maiming several of the sheep. The body of a man, apparently drowned, was found on the Waimakiriri river bank, near the outfall of Stewart's Gully. It is supposed to be that of Henry Fermis, who left his home at Kaiapoi on 21st May. He was supposed to have committed snioide. COMMITTED FOR TBIAL FOR ASSAULTING A CHINAMAN, Dunedin, August 30. John Matheson, insurance agent, was committed for trial for robbing 1 and assaulting a Chinaman. He met a Chinaman, who is a hawker, on the road, and asked to see his license, demanding £1 at the same time, The Chinaman was rather slow in complying, when Matheson struck him and knocked his goods about, John eventually handing over 10s. t» get rid of him.
