POLITICAL GOSSIP.
[fbom oub own correspondent.] Wellington, June 5. — There is likely to be a big fight over Mr. Balance's Native Lands Bill. Mr. W. L. Hces was down hero all last session from Poverty Bay endeavoring to get a bill passed such as Mr. Balknco now proposed, giving Native Committees power to legislate. Judge Fenton published a very exhaustive retumi in the Auckland Star last year which is well worthy of perusal now. It showed clearly that these Committees had been tried before in another form, and that tbey merely proved wholesale stumblingblocks in the way of settlement, and had to be swept away. Political rumors ore already rife. One is to the effect of a coalition between Sir G. Grey, Mr. Macandrew, and Mr. Montgomery. No one believes it. Mr. Edward Wakefield, who has lately hssumed the editorship of tho Evening Ptvts, is slasbiog out ia his old style at Sir Julius Yogel and Mr. Buckley, - and occasionally at Mr. Ballance. I hear the Press has doubled its circulation since Mr. Wakefield joined it.
