LIBEL CASE AT WESTPORT. "Westport, June 15. At the R.M. Court Jlr. Haseldean, County Council Solicitor, proceeded against Mr. Tyrell, proprietor of the Westport Star, for libel. After plaintiff had given formal evidence, the defendant commenced to cross- examine him with a view of showing the statement he had published to be true. Plaintiff declined to answer the questions. The Acting-Magistrate (Mr. Baker) ■upheld him. The case was adjourned until the 26th, to allow the defendant time to obtain professional assistance. Mr. Haseldean is the only solicitor residing in Westport. Mr. Bishop, of Wellington, intends to commence practice here. The grounds for the libel action are some commeuts in the open column of the Star upon Haseldean 's defence of the case Powell v. County Council, in which the Council was defeated. MORTGAGES AND BILLS OF RALE. Invercargill, June 15. Several matters of importance were discussed at ypsterday's meeting of the Chamber of Commerce. A draft j of the Act amending the conveyancing i ordinance in the direction of providing for a re-lease of mortgages without expense was adopted ; as also was a draft amendment of the Bills of Sales Act, placing greater restrictions on the practice of traders in giving bills of sale. These will be forwarded to the Minister of Justice and to the various Colonial Chambers. A motion was also passed regretting the inability of the Chamber to send a delegate to the proposed conference at Wellington re the bankruptcy law, but cordially approving of any efforts made for their amendment, which it has at various times endeavored to bring about.
