AN AFFRAY WITH THE NATIVES.
[by telegraph.] A. TELUGRAM from Gisborne yesterday states that the s.s. Rowena arrived there oh Thursday morning, with Tuta Nihoniho on board. Tho steamer also bad on board Captain Porter, Uopa a, Henare Potue, two policemen, and Lauder. At 8 o'clock the policomen left on board sent word to Tuta to come back. He and the whole hapu came naked, danced a war-dance, aud fired ovor the heads of Porter's party. Flop it ta and Potae koreroed with them. Captain Porter Bpoke, and said he would not allow Tufca to get into trouble, notwithstanding his people. Thou Tufc-i said he would come, and the people caught hold of him, and a souffla ensuorf, Captain Porter getting between him and them. One Maori with a loaded gtm threatened to shoot Captain Porter. Another stood before tho latter, saying,, " You will have to shoot mo first.' Finally the Maoris reluctantly gave way. A great crowd of men, women, and child ron followed about a mile and a-half to the boat, where they again refused to lot him go. Porter's friends again stuck to him, and by diplomacy set the natives fighting amongst themselves, in tho midst of which Tuta was shipped, and the steamor left Gisborno.
