LUCKY STOOKWELL. Auckland, April 30. The mail steamer took away the Rev. Mr. Totnlinson, Dr. Stockwell, and Mr. Edward Isaacson, for a trip to England. An inquiry is goiug on in the Newton East School ou a complaint of the assistant master, Mr. Thwaites, and other teachers against the head master, Mr. Johnson. Alfred Parker Brown, charged with attempting suicide on board the steamer Wellington on her passage np the coast, has been remanded. He was suffering from delirium tremens. GONE. The Premier aud Native Minister left by the afternoon train for Waikato to turn the first sod of the Hamilton Railway. They have received a formal invitation to attend the native meeting, signed by Rewi, with the sanction of other chiefs. James Kears, warehouse keeper of Queen's Bond, was found in an oathouse last nijrht with his throat cut, and is not expected to recover. The Waterworks Committee of the City Council have acceded in favour of a scheme for a farther water supply from Wainuiomata, at an estimated cost of £100,000. REGISTERED. One hundred and four births and 56 deaths were registered in the city this month, and 31 marriage certificates were issued. MAKING A RAID. The police are making a raid on the shopkeepers for exposing goods outside their buildings. GRBYMOUTH RAILWAY. The tender of Mr. W. Rowe, Wanganui, for the Greymouth contract of the Hokitika and Greymouth Railway, at £8440, has been accepted. The next tender was £10,351. WORGAN GUILTY. YVanganui, May 1. J. B. Worgan's trial lasted all day. At midnight the jorj brought in a verdict of guilty of forgery and guilty of tittering, withoat intent to defraud. The prisoner said ! c could not under, stand the verdict, but admitted that he liad bad an impartial trial. ' Had he been at liberty since the committal he would have been able to procure exonerating evidence, and trusted to public opinion arriving at a different result than that of the jury. He threw himself on the mercy of the Court. Judge Richmond, in passing sentence, said he would take into account that in all probability the prisoner did not intend to defraud to the full amount, but had merely dabbled in crime. He was sentenced to tw© years imprisonment with bard labour. MORMONS. Christchurch, May 1. Two Mormon elders are seeking converts in Lyttelton.
