April 17. — Snow is already on the hills around Dunedin. Twenty-two more immigrants are to be removed from Quarantine Island tomorrow. Two new railway stations are being erected, one at Caversbam, and one at Green Island. April 18. — Captain Hutton has reported the existence of a very valuable coal bed at Tokomairiro, extending over 60 square miles, and estimated to contain 100,000,000 tons of coal. It is of a good brown description, and is not lignite, and Captain Hutton states that it is as valuable as most in the Colony. The seams are from three to twenty feet thick. The engineer is at once to be sent up on the survey and a branch railway, three miles in length will be constructed to convey it to the main line. It is expected that the coal will be sold in Dunedin for 12s. a ton. The total number of immigrants who arrived in Dunedin during; the quarter ending 31st March was 2,260, showing a net increase of 1882 over the previous quarter.
