CANTERBURY.
A portion of the census returns has been made public. The population of Christchurch is 10,265 ; Timaru, 2,009 ; Kaiapoi, 1,002. Those that have increased sinoe 1871 are — Cbristchurcb, 2,334 5 Timarn, 591 j Kaiapoi, 134. There was a narrow escape from a fire in the heart of Canterbury, on the morning of the 17th April. The roof of Spensley's music shop canght fire, and was extinguished, with difficulty. The damage is estimated at £50. The Fire Brigade assembled very expeditiously.
