HOLIDAYS.

CLOSING OF SHOPS. THE POSITION EXPLAINED. The Inspector of Factories, Temuka (Sergeant T. Dwan) has advised by the District Inspector Factories as follows:— “In connection with the closing of shops in your district during the Christmas and New Year holidays, I beg to advise that the position is as follows:—Any shopkeeper who is required to close on one half-day in the week may change the day of the late night on which employees are required to work to any one of the six days preceding Christmas and New Year. It naturally follows that he will also be able to change the day of his half-holiday. If any shopkeeper closes his -shop for two whole working days other than that of the statutory half-holiday during any one week, then he will not be required to observe a -half-holiday during that particular week. During Christmas week the shopkeepers may observe two late nights, and employ assistants accordingly in that week, but if -so, then they will not be entitled to work assistants for a late night during the following week. “Since the amendment of 1927 to the Shops and Offices Act, shops in the Temuka and Geraldine districts are not now required to close in the evenings -at any specific hour except on the day of the half-holi-day, when they will close as usual. This, however, does not give the right to work the employees for more than 48 hours per week. On the evening -of the late night prior J to Christmas and New Year, the *

employees may be required to work till 10 o’clock, providing that the hours for that day shall not exceed 11, and for the week 48. Grocers’ assistants may not work more than 10J hours on the day of the late night. On evenings other than that of the late night, employees cannot be worked after 7 p.m.”
