FOOTBALL.

S.C. MJGBY UNION. The annual 'general meeting of the South Canterbury liugby. Football Union will" be held' this evening and the following (report will be presented : Clu'lji lixtures again provided very mforesting football, the public showing their appreciation by turning great numbers every Thursday. The various grades were won by Temuka senior, Temuka' junior, Star third grade, Star fourth grade. Owing' to hiivinglnnother senior team in* the com petition this year, your committee empowered the ground committee to turn round the' No. 2 ground on the Athletic ground, with a result that two senior matches were' played on these grounds every week. This year only one home igame was played and that was North Otago, which was won by our team by 14-6. The lUnion this year sent , a team on tour to Ashibiurton, Christehurch, Inveroargill and Duneddn The matches against Ashburton (C-10), Canterbury (9-10), and Otago (8-14) were lost ; but we won against Southiland (IS-S).- Messrs G. Coles, G. Fitzgerald, and G. Wall were selected to represent the South Island sg|ainst the North Island at Christchurch, the match 'being won by the South Island. Mr A. Budd was selected to represent :.N t qw ( . Zealand,,- on the tour to New South Wales and Queensland. The year began with a cash balance of £B4 6s lid, and closes with one of £,15 4s 10d, but whereas £4O 19s 3cj was'outstanding'in 1909, this year we have only only £2O 8s 6d, while £2O Ms 2d is owing to this Union, so that when we consider that an extensive tf>ur was undertaken, the result appears 'quite, satisfactory. For this we are largely indebted to the Otago and Southland ltugby Unions for their fmarx; al assistance. Sohool football was again well managed by a subcommittee of teachers, and they deserve our best thanks for their efforts. The senior competition was very keen, and at the end of the second round three teams—Timaru Main, Temuka, and Waimate—were espial in competition points. The play-oli gave Timaru Main the championship for the year, Temuka coming second. A junior competition 'and a sewm-a-side tournament were also satisfactorily carried out during the season. A representative school fifteen journeyed to Christchurch to meet a North Canterbury fifteen, and after a close game suffered defqat by 3 points to nil. The annual seven-a-sido tournament again proved a great success, large entries being received, several from outside unions. The net gain to the Union being- £SO 12s 3d. Tho South Canterbury Referees' Association has again rendered the Union great assistgnce, for" it- has undertaken and very satisfactorily carried out the referocing of the whole of the four grades of matches, while receiving only very slight monetary assistance from the Union's funds. The scheme for the insurance of players was started last year, an accident policy being taken out with the National Insurance Co>, Ltd. Each man has to pay the fee of 2s (kl and has to be a financial member of his club. The Companv will again take up the risk, a! ,d clubs are requested to see that all players are insured before they go on the field. 'Again wo 'have to heartily (hank the Press of (ho district. Tn conclusion, we are pleased to say that the prospeels for the coming season look particularly bright.
