OBITUARY,

<?. Another early pioneer, and one of South Canterbury's oldest residents, passed away .at Omri on Tuesday morning in the person of Mr Samuel i Breadley, at the age of seventy-two. Mr Breadley was a native of Antrim, Ireland, and landed in Auckland about fifty years ago. After residing in that province for some little time he made his way to South Canterbury, and, following his trade as a builder, erected a considerable number of the houses, at present standing in Timnru and other parts of the district. He afterwards leased and personally conducted the Burke's Bass Hotel, Mackenzie Country, and subsequently purchased the Orari Hotel, then a wooden structure, together with thirty acres of first class land adjoining the hotel. While conducting this hotel he also farmed the land with much success, on one or two occasion." growing wheat, which yielded an average of fifty bushels per acre, and potatoes, which yielded "P to sixteen tons per acre. The wooden hotel was subsequently burnt down, and Mr Breadley erected the present brick building, which for the past fourteen vears has been in the occupation of Mr W. Quirk-. Deceased retired from the hotel business about sixteen years ago, having taken a long lease of the Orari racecourse reserve, where: he erected a little, homestead. He farmed the racecourse reserve with marked success. The late Mr Breadley was of a quiet, retiring disposition bill, made numerous close friends, and was always admired for his untiriuu industry and straightforward dealings.
