Till-: 1 ’ K E LIM i.N A R Y ARRANGEMENTS. Oil Thursday afternoon a meeting of pelsons interested in, holding - a Baud (.'oldest in Tcmuka wqs held in one of the orderly rooms of the Temuka Volunteer Hall. The Mayor Mr T. Buxton, presided, and there were also present Rev. Rather Kelley, Ur. Paterson, Messrs Croxford, (Bandmaster T.emuka Municipal Brass Band), E. Chapman (Secretary Brass Band) E. Rissel, R. Morris, Williamson J. McLean, Dan McCaskill, Cinders, J. Harrison, J. Sim, Dunford, J. M. Twomey and-~Hintz. The Secretary said he had received apologies for absence from the Rev. J. M. Adcock, Messrs H. E. Capper, W. H. Brown, and E. Brown. The Chairman said the meeting was the outcome of a similar but smaller meeting held a fortnight previously, to discuss the possibility and advisabilisty of holding a Band Contest in November. It was thought advisable to submit the matter to a large meeting after it was seen how many bands were likely to enter. This infonuatiDii they had now obtained, and they had promises of support in writing from a number of bauds. Hie former meeting was also adjourned because they wanted the support and assistance of a larger number of persons. If they were to achieve success they must’have the help of aniont'husiastic and energetic committee. He was glad to sec so many present, as P showed the interest being taken in the matter. The Secretary (Mr E. Chapman) then read the replies Bom the bands invited to attend. 1 avoiable replies were received from The Ashburton County Brass Band (Mr Gates, secretary.) Lyttelton Marino Baud (Mi J. t.. Rutland,,, /•saqrctary ) Tiinaru Marine Band (D. I ostei, Secretary.) , Morniiigtoii Band, Dunedin (W. iol 10 RangIora a Brass Band (D. Taylor, S '(s o i-e Brass Band (A. Christie, sectar,!rt Chalmers Brass Band (W. Cadunan, secretary). Waimato Brass Band (L. Ritch e, secretary). . , ~ AT ,. Oamam Oilmens Band (J. R. McBride, secretary). . Those bands replying as n o t being able to lake part in the contest were the Mosglel, Milton, and Mayfl In replv to Mr Twomcy, Bandmaster Croxford said they were proposing to net up a Second-class Baw Association, and that one already existed in Otago and Southland, but that would not prevent Otago and Southland bands joining this one. It would be for the bands that attended the contest to decide whether a n Association should bo formed. The toimatiou of a n Association had nothing to do with the contest. Tlu chairman said they seemed to have definite promises from five-bands and • three other replies were favourable, but not definite. . In reply to Mr Twomey the chauman said they expected eight or nine bands to attend. They wanted guarantees for about A2OO and within £SO of the amount was guaranteed when the last meeting took place. Thi- entrance fee for bands would probably be two guineas. Several of those present signed the guarantee form’. " - Mr McCaskill said he was not an expert in musical’matters, but to him i t seemed almost impossible to hold the contest on the dates suggested. They expected to hold sports hi connection with the grand stand in and lie knew.ilie band would not want to clash with that, and to hold the contest in October seemed almost impossible. He would rather see the contest postponed for 12 months and be sure of success than see it got up prematurely. At the same lime ho wished to say that ho would support the contest all ho could. Bandmaster Croxford said this was not Hie first move in the three-. tion of holding a contest.: Over 12 months ago the band tried to do .something’similar and wrote to the various bands in Canterbury. They got replies from 12— three favourable the others suggested holding it oyer for .12 months. This band replied Ithat they would bring the matter rip again, and they had been errangmg cho preliminaries since the early part of tins year. The proposal .was not new to the Canterbury bands. As falas time w ;x s concerned, very little time was required to work it up. The chief thing was to got the music Last year they had written to Messrs Pcyling, in Sydney, and asked how much time they would requ re to forward a contest selection, and they rc-, plied I fiat they would forward a contest selection that had never been played in the colonies within a week of receipt of order. IE they wrote on Saturday they could expect to receive the selection within'a fortiiiight. That gave the bands three months and a week to prepare. The usual period Was three months. It would not matter much if tliei music did no 1 reach them" until IB before the contest. They intended that bands competing should . supply their own music for Quickstep , competition, making their own selection. The bands could go on with that at once. He had been connected with two or three band contests, and had copies of the rules, etc., so that proorammes could be got out, without delay. In reply to Dr. Paterson the chairman said at last meeting it Was decided to leave the decision as to whether a contest should bo held Until the replies from bands were received . Mr Sim thought they should strike while the iron w a s hot and go on. He asked leave to retire, but before gome he wished to say ho was in favour of going on and would do all lie could to help. In reply to Mr Twomey as to how many bands would be required ‘ to make the Contest a success Mr Croxford said at the first contest at Greymonth last year four bands were present and it was very successful and a profit of £l3O, was made. This year eight bands competed, and it was a huge success. He thought if five bands came to Tcmuka with their own the contest would be a greatsucccss. The most suitable time according to the replies would bo about the middle of October, Say the 13th o rl4th or thereabouts. In reply to Mr Harrison as to whether they Would have the test selection on the first day, Mr Croxford said that would have to bo decided, also the days the contest would extend over. The chairman then gave an estimate of the probable receipts and expend! lure. ; Mr iff. Williamson spoke of Tire great success of contestsv at New

Plymouth and Hawera, and was ot with the remark that they were arger places;. Mr Twomey said that was so, but it must be remembered ,h a t they h a d a large town like Tint am at their do o r,. Geraldine was not far a w a y and the district was closely settled. (I-leai’, hoar.) Mr Harrison thought it would bo a thousand pities to throw cold water on the proposal. They had an enthusiastic bandmaster, and au energetic band, and they should back them up. Ho moved —That a band contest be hold on 11th and 12th October.” After several had spoken favorably the motion w a s carried unanimously" On the motion of Mr McCaskill, seconded by Mr Rissekl, it was resolved that the music, bo cabled for. The Mayor was unanimously elected supervisor. Mr A. A. Hint/; was elected secretary, aud Br. Paterson treasurer. The following general committee was elected ;—Messrs Croxford, llisse.t, Chapman, M. Williamson,, J. McLean. 11. Morris, D. McCaskill, Cinders, .J. Harrison, C. Dunford, John Sim, Tlintz, W. H. Brown, H. E. Capper, Rev. Father Kerlcy and Dr. Paterson, with power to add. The hope was expressed that several Geraldine gentlemen w o uVd act on the Committee. Messrs Croxford, Kissel, Chapman and Harrison were appointed a musical committee. On the motion of Mr McCasMll a hearty :volc of thanks w a s Passed to Mr E- .’Chapman, the Band’s Secretary. for the largo amount of preVminary work ho had done, and to the Chairman for presiding. The mooting then terminated.

A meeting of the Musical Committee was held the same evenin'?, when the programme was ari'aug?d, mid it is expected to be out of the printer's hands to-day. The music for the contest has boon cabled for.
