fHE ENGLISHMEN v. SOUTHLAND. INVERCARGILL, Feb. 18. The match, Lord Hawke's team v. Southland began to-day in doubtful weather. Light rain fell before daybreak. Southland batted first and put togoihor 87 runs, the chief scorers being Tapley 25, Wilson 13, Kean 11, and Poole 10. Three players did not, score. It was. expected that the Englishmen wbtild completely run over the local team, but they wera all out "for 107, the bowling of Taylor and Keen'an being'good. At the close of the .day, in a very poor light Southland had lost four wickets for 17. The'Englishmen's fielding was excellent and their scores were as follows :—Leatham % Whatman 12. A match between Winchester and Givil Service will be played at Timaru to-day.. February 19. The match Lord Hawke's team v. Southland 15 finished to-day. Southland continuing their second innings made 104 runs. The Englishmen, with 87 to get to win sent in Burnup and Johnston. The latter made four and then got leg before to Taylor. Burnup carried out-his bat for - '34, j Whatman 35 (retired to go fishing), Taylor made 18 and then got his leg before to Tapley, Stanning (not out) 11.
