The Australasian Championship Meeting,
The first day's events of the Australasian championships at Auckland on Friday were brought off in fine weather, but a strong westerly wind interfered somewhat with the runners. It favoured the sprinters, but in the back stretch handicapped the distance men. Results : 600 Yards Flat Handicap —Chevis, (Auckland (34yds) 1, Marriott, Auckland (16yds) 2, Mahoney, Queensland, (20yds) 3. Won by six yards. Time, lmin losec. Bread Jump.—Hunter (Victoria), 20ft siin 1, McPherson (Victoria) 20ft lin 2, Gardner (Victoria) 19ft 9Jin 3. Harper (New Zealand), 18ft 3Jin. Five Mile Bicycle.—Spragg (100yds) 1, Thomas (140yds) 2, Brook (70yds) 3. A close finish. Weight Putting. —O'Reilly had a walk over (41ft). 440 Yards Flat.—Oxlade (New South Wales) 1, Webster (New Zealand) 2, Campbell (Queensland) 3. Won easily. Time, 52 4-ssee. Three Mile Walk.—Wilson (New Zealand) 1, Barrett (Victoria) 2. Purbrick (Victoria), and Barr Brown (New Zealand) started, but gave up. Time, 22min 21sec. Mile Run.—Simpson (New Zealand) 1, Sutton (Victoria) 2, Saunderson (Queens land) 3. Won by 50 yards. Time, 4min 29sec. 120 Yards Hurdles.—Smith (New Zealand) 1, Gardner (Victoria) 2, Harper (New Nealand) 3. Won by five yards. Time, 15 4-ssec. Dec. 21. New Zealand easily retains the championship, the points at the conclusion of the meeting being—New Zealand 8 points, Victoria and New South Wales 3 points each, Queensland 1 point. About 5000 persons were present, and great enthusiasm was displayed. Results : 100 Yards Championship.—Final Heat— Moir, (Victoria) 1; Smith and Hunter a dead heat for second place. Gardner also ran. Time, lOsec. High Jump Championship.—Laurie, sft sin, 1 ; Harper, sft 4in, 2. Half Mile Championship.—Wentworth, 1; Harper, 2 ; Sutton, 3. Time, lmin 59 l.Ssec; this equals the Australasian record. 220 Yards Final Moir (Victoria), 1; Henderson, 2; Keating N.Z., 3. Won by three yards. Time 23 I.ssec. Mile Walk.—D. Wilson N. Z., 1; Barrett, V., 2 ; Dickey, 3. Throwing The Hammer.—O'Reilly, w. o, 129 ft 6Jin. Pole Jump.—Laerie, w. 0., 10ft. j 440 Yards Hurdles.—G. W. Smith, N. Z., I 1 ; M. Mo herson, V., 2; A. S.
