Land Settlement.

At the banquet to the Hon. T. Y. Duncan Minister for Lands, at Oamaru, Mr Duncan, m the course of his address, referred to the work of land settlement. He said that 362,983 acres of land were put in the market from the Ist of April to 30th September, 1901. There were 1050 selectors of an area of 379,708 acres, lor the eight months of the year the gross revenue of the Department was £243,579, including the territorial revenue of .£152,600. The lands purchased under the Land for Settlements Act during the present year from the Ist April to the present time were 32,592 acres. There was also an estate near Wyndlnim, Glenham, containing 11,500 acres, which was in course of survey, and would be in the market shortly in farms oi from 150 to 500 acres,, with a few larger sections. There was a great demand for land in the Hawkes Bay district, but the owners there were averse to parting with their land. Mr Duncan referred to the purchase already made in Hawkes Bay, and said that it was the intention of the Government, in spite of all opposition, to go on with the purchase of land. The dairy industry had grown greatly during the past ten years, and the Government had done much to assist it.
