TIMARU HARBOR BOARD.

The monthly meeting of thii Bon'd was held on Wednesday. Present—-Messrs Acton (Chairman), Wilson, Morris, Tesohemaker, Qr y, and Kosi. The Engineer of Working Ba : lweys and Mr Lowe wrote at length respecting the crossing at Whales’ Greek of the Wai-iti tramway over the main line of railway. The former said the employees of the railway would put up all signals, boxes, etc., the cost being £273. The Cbeirman explained that the eon* tractors would be at the expense named. Messrs Palliser and Jones wrote offtring the Board their concrete mixing plant.—The matter wes referred to the Standing Com* mittee.

The Chairman said that the tender of Mr J. Mollioy of £39 10s for repairs to the Titan bad been accepted. The Treasury wrote, enclosing ohsqas for £149 10s 7d, refund of wharfage, etc. The report of the Standing Committee recommended that the. slip should be under the charge of Mr Waldron, and asked for authority to devise a scheme for ths/rs* trenohmcnt of current expenditure.—-Con-sideration of ths last-named subject was dsferred.

The Engineer reported that the exceptionally high tide end heavy sea on the 28th March had done the breakwater no harm. The Titen wes hauled up on the slipway on the 4th inst,, and launched again at midday on the 7th. Everything connected with the slipway worked very well, with the exception of the hauling up chain, which broke three times, it having been overstrained' previously to being used in connection with the slip, With the new chain about to arrive he did not anticipate tha slightest hitch in successfully hauling up vessels of 200 tons burden. The tramway; line for the north htole contract is all linked in, and ballasting- will be proceeded with immediately. Since last meeting the Taniwha had dredged and die* charged about 2500 tons of spoil in 17 working days. t The Harbourmaster reported the arrival of 21 steamers and 7 sailing vessels, of a total registersd tonnage of 8962 tons, and the departure of 21 steamers and 4 sailing vessels of an aggregate registered tonnage of 7793 tons, during the mouth of March. The chairman said by the terms of the contract the board had to make an advance to the contractors of 60 per cent, on cost of tramway, and it was necessary that the engineer should make an estimate of the value of the plant, and advise the solicitor respecting sesurity.—The engineer was instructed to make the estimate.

After a slight discussion it was resolved 11 That the engineer be instructed to lift the top layer of pell me.l blocks now lying on the south side of the breakwater." For laying connections, etc., to the light to be erected at the end of the breakwater, Mr J, Graigie's tender, £3l 9s 63, was accepted. Accounts amounting to £6OO 7s fid were passed for payment, and the meeting ter« minated.
