TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.

The monthly meeting oftheTemuka Road Board was held at ttie Board’s office last Tuesday. Present—Messrs Talbot (Chairman), Hayluirst, Brown and Quiun. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read aid confirmed. chairman’s statement. The Chairman stated that in the early part of the mouth his attention had been called to the timber lying in the Board’s yard. Some of it was lying there rotting, and entirely wasting. He had looked over it, and came to the conclusion that it would be better to get some of it cut into suitable sizes for the Board’s use. Some of it that was of not much use to (he Board might bo picked out and sold. He would suggest that all of it that was of any use should be tarred ; it would have to be tarred when used in a bridge, and in the meantime it would be better preserved by being tarred. He would like the members to have a look through the yard. He also stated that the election of members, which, by the Act, has to take place once in three years, would be held some time during next month. INTERVIEWS. Mr Bisseit interviewid the Board, and asked that the drain running past his and Mr Thomas’ land might be cleaned, as the water which was dammed up was injuring his property. He stated that ho was unwilling to pay a part towards the work being done, as it was rendered necessary through the action of the Board in diverting the water from its proper course and bringing it along his frontage. The drain would really bo of more benefit to Mr Thomas, who was unable to attend.—The Overseer stated that the water was injuring the road by keeping it rather soft.—After hearing what the Overseer had to say upon the matter, it was decided to authorise him to get the work—about 18 chains—done.

Messrs Budd and Piumar also waited upon the Board to ask that a portion of the boundary road between the Ternuka and Qeraidine Districts be not opened for traffic. Mr Bissett said the road was not nt all necessary, and Mr Deßenzy had brought it before the Qeraidine Board, although he had promised him (Mr Budd) he would not. It was altogether a personal matter. —The Chairman said they had nothing to do with personal differences. What they wanted to know was whether the road was necessary or not. Ho next read a letter from the Geraldine Road Board, intimating that in conformity with the agreement existing between the two Boards, the Geraldine Board was prepared to do its share of the work, and that it would coat about £2O. Messrs Budd and Piumar urged that there was uo necessity at all for opening the road, and that its maintenance would involve considerable expense.—After the deputation had withdrawn, Mr Browo said that Mr Budd was cropping the road ; that there were no fences on it, and that he expected it was a matter of jealousy.— After some further discussion it was resolved to let the matter stand over until the Overseer had reported on the subject.

Mr James Marshall waited on the Board to ask for a crossing to his section. He said he would provide “ the timber and labor” himself, if the Board would send its own men to do the work, so that it might be done Well.—Mr Quinn : Where is the section, Mr Marshall.— Mr Marshall; Where 1 am living; at t»e shop.—The Chairman ; That is in the Town District.—Mr Marshall : 1 heard the other day there was no To*n Board. (Laughter). Could you inform me where 1 could get the work done.~Mr Quinn : Come to-morrow night at seven o’clock to the Town Board. —Mr Mar shall ; 1 am willing to provide timber and labor. (Laughter). I hope op execution will be taken against me.—Mr Marshall then retired. qOKIBSPONDUNC*. The following corres; oudence was read and considered :

Fiom the Hon. W. Rolleston, and also ftom Mr Gordon, Rangitata, asking the Board to have the d min between Mr Rolleston’a properly and the Education Reserve cleaned out. —The Overseer stated that the drain needed cleaning out. It would be an improvement to the road in the

winter if it were done. —The Chairman pointed on! that the cleaning of the drain would be a benefit both to the road and the property-holders. The question was whether it was fair to the other ratepayers to keep this drain open at the Board’s expense. He though some contribution to the cost should be made by those property-holders who would be benefited by the work. He thought a contribution of 25 per cent would be sufficient.—lt was estimated that the work required to be done was about 210 chains.—it was decided that the Board correspond with the property holders, informing them that the work would be done upon the Board receiving notification from the land-owners of their willingness to pay 25 per cent of the cost. From Mr Dickenson, asking that the Milford Greek be cleaned out, us it was becoming choked with watercress, and signifying his willingness to bear half the cost.—lt was decided that the offer of Mr Dickenson could not be entertained.

From Mrs Burke, asking to be allowed the free use of one of the Road Board’s cottages.—lt was decided to inform Mrs Burke that there was no Road Board cottage available at present. From the Colonial Secretary, stating that the Central Board of Health would agree to the amalgamation of the Town and Road Boards as a Local Board of Health for dealing with epidemic diseases, and enclosing a draft of a special order which would require to be made,—Mr Hayhurst asked how would the separation of Arowhenua affect the question.—The Chairman said it would put the Road Board in a much more favorable position. —Mr Haylumt did not think the Road Board need take any action in the matter if Arowhenua were to separate.— The Chairman did not think so. Epidemic disease spread all over the district, and probably the expense of attending such cases would be as large as attending cases in the town.—Mr Brown thought it was belter to see what would be done in the case of Arowhenua, Perhaps the three Boards would combine then, —It was decided to defer taking any action in the matter, pending the result of the agitation going on in Arowhenua. —In reply to a question, the Chairman said there was no power to stop the people of Arowhenua constituting their township a Town District,

The annual report of the. Tiraaru Harbor Board was laid upon the table for those members who might wish to see it. ACCOUNTS, Accounts to the amount of £172 6s 9d were passed for payment. FINANCES.
