S.C. BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The monthly ■ meeting of the South Canterbury Board of Education was held, on Thursday morning. Present -Mr S. W. Goldsmith (Chairman), Rev. Geo, Barclay, Dr Foster, and Messrs R. A, Barker, J. Talbot, and M. Gray. In his opening statement the Chairman said the following appointments had been made : —Miss Martin, 'to the Makikil.i School; Miss F. Hawke, to Geraldine Miss E. Smith, to the Side School, Timaru, as locum tenens ; Miss F. Hill, as pupil teacher to the Timaru Main School ; Miss B. Brown, to the Rangitira Valley School; Mies F. Brown, to the Temuka School. With respect to the Inspector’s report on the South Rangitata School, it had' been forwarded to the Committee, but they bad not yet taken any action upon it. It was, he thought, the duty of the Board to do something in the matter. Two tenders hud been received for additions and repairs to the Pleasant Valley School, but as they much exceeded the Architects’ estimate, he (the Chairman) had not accepted either of them. The additional windows wanted at the Geraldine School were being put in, the cost of which would be £l4 ss. Mr W. J. Steward wrote resigning his seat, which was accepted with regret. Mr E, Wakefield’s seat is also now vacant.

The Architects reported that (he new school buildings at Rangitira Valley, and the class-room at the Geraldine School, had been completed; and that the Orari Bridge School only needed painting to finish it off. They added that the Chairman had considered the tenders for work at the Pleasant Valley School too high, and they therefore recommended the Board to wait until they were in a position to build" a new one there.—lt was decided to call for fresh tenders for the work at the Pleasant Valley School. The Inspector reported on the Waihoa and Opihi Schools. Be the latter, he said the householders in the vicinity of the school strongly objected to the removal of it to Fraser’s corner. This course was suggested by the deputation from the Totara Valley, and he thought it was worthy of consideration. —On the suggestion ~of the Rev. Mr Barclay, it was decided to postpone consideration of the matter till next meeting, when the Rev. Jasper Symthe, who is well acquainted with the district, will be present, The result of the election of members of the Board to fill the ordinary and extraordinary vacancies is as follows Ordinary, the Rev, Geo. Barclay, and Messrs J. Jackson and S. W. Goldsmith ; extraordinary, the Rev. Jasper Symthe. The Rev. George Barclay waa elected as one of the representatives of the Board of Education on the Waimate High School Board, the other seat being left open, pending the election of Mr Steward’s successor.

The request of the Fairlie Creek School Oommhtee, that the interior of the old portion of their school should be repainted, was granted, Mr Jones attended the meeting, and asked the Board if they would refund £32 18s 9d, which had been expended on the Kakahu Bush school buildings. He pointed out that several of the residents liad not, through one cause and another, been able to keep their engagements, and others had backed out of thei s —After Mr Jones had withdrawn, the Board decided that the application could not be entertained. The question involved was one of principle, and as the Board had kept their part of the agreement it was only right the residents should keep theirs. To grant the application would mean an outlay of much ntqnpy, aq other Comtpittees similarly situated might also come on the Board for refunds.

Mr James Austin wrote to the Board, again urging that his daughter, a scholar? ship holder, might be allowed fo attend the High School at Timaru, instead of either the Teipuka or Winchester schools. —The Rev. Mr Barclay said the matter had been settled, and it was useless to again go into it.—Mr Talbot said he intended to give notice of motion for next meeting, when the subject could be again discussed.

Miss E. Meredith was appointed a pupil teacher at the Eakabu Bush School.

Proposed by the Rev. Mr Barclay, seconded by Mr Gray, and carried— M That with the exception of those works already carried outj plans, etc., be prepared for the works sanctioned by the Board on December 3rd, 1885, and tenders for the same be submitted at next ordinary meeting.”—The mover pointed out that the building grant would be due next month.

Mr Barclay drew attention to the fact that part of the land comprising the 40 acres of the schosl reserve, Rangitatu, was good for grazing or other purposes, and the Chairman promised to see to the leasing of it. Accounts amounting to £77 2s 41 were 'passed for payment,, and he meeting terminated,
