TEMUKA 0.0. F. TIMARU C.C. Oo Saturday last a Temuka eleven journeyed to Titnarn to try conclusions with the Club there. On arriving in Timaru the visitors were very cordially entertained by the home team at the Ship Hote, where the amplest justice was done to the lunch provided. Play was began very shortly after 2 p.m. Godby being successful at the spinning of the coin sent Raymond and Rothwell oat to bat, Bryars entrusting Hayhurst and Pish with the leather. In the former gentleman’s second over a pretty bailer dismissed Raymond. I—l—s, This brought the captain from the pavilion, who soon found It fairly difficult to put on runs, the bowling and fielding being both above the average. After some steady play he allowed Hayhurst to take his off bail, after having played a careful innings. The telegraph showed 2—9—27. Perry succeeded and, beginning very carefully, gave a great deal of trouble. Rothwell, however, found Hayhurst too good for him for once, and retired almost immediately after a correctly-played innings of 17, a nice 4 being included in this. 3 17—28. Jefferson then appeared, but did not keep Perry company long, as Fish, who had been delivering his balls with exemplary patience got one in, 4 Manning then joined Perry, and the stand of the day was made. Each batsman seemed to realise that things looked a trifle blue, and the utmost care was shown. The fielding at this stage of the game was the best the Temuka men have yet shown, Brown at cover point being of the utmost use to both bowlers. At length, after two changes of bowling, Bethune bowled Manning with a Yorker, 6—25—77, and the same ball repeated sent back Hughes. Fraser was then beautifully caught at cover point, and things looked pleasant again for Temuka, especially as Perry also succumbed to Gurr, who had taken Hayhursi’s place. 8—24—92, But before the innings closed Lawrenson and Reid showed such determination to get runs that, although Bryars tried a double change again, each of them got into double figures. At last the innings closed for 124, or considerably less than the most sanguine of the visitors had hoped for. At 5 p.m. Bryare sent in Brown and Gurr to begin the rungetting, but Rothwell was against them and his second ball sent Brown back to the pavilion. Then Bryars succeeded. He and Gurr made the pace hot, punishing Raid, however, somewhat theoftoner. Bryars allowed Rothwell to remove his bails too soon, and he made way for Fish. 2—12—22. The new coiner played a different game, and in a style as patient ,as his bowling had been gave the bowlers no end of trouble. Gurr soon allowed him new company, having played well for his score. 8—11—24. Heap was immediately bowled off his pad, and the next comer was as unlucky. Here Bethune joined his old associate, and the hopes of the strangers began to revive. Both batsmen played a correct game, but unfortunately gave the fielders too little to do, the bowling being considerably improved after Rothwell and Reid changed ends. Nothing of note occurred till Hayhurst appeared, and soon rattled up 13 in his usual rapid manner. After his departure all was over, the innings almost immediately closing for 66. Ogilvie seemed to be in good form, and got bis 10 together quickly, After the bowling and fielding of the Temuka their batting presented a sad contrast, and showed as plainly a« can be shown that there must really be more practice before good bowling like Saturday’s can be scored off.
