GERALDINE SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

Tbs usual monthly meeting of the above Committee was held on Friday evening. Present—Messrs N. Dunlop (Chairman), W. R. Lawson, W. H. Lodge, Geo. Ward, A. Sherratt, and T. Farrell. MINUTES. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read as follows : From the Board of Education,for* warding a copy of the amendment to the Education Act 1877, for the in* formation of members. From the same, acknowledging the receipt of the Committee’s letter re a new bell, and stating that the Rot. Geo. Barclay bad undertaken to inquire into particulars regarding the request for same, and to report to next meeting of Board. From the Bast Oxford School Committee, forwarding a memorial for tbo signature*of the Committee. Under > the present regulation in force North Canterbury teachers of district schools are allowed to put children back from the Standard last passed to a lower one at their own discretion. Much dissatisfaction is caused, and complaints made in consequence of this, as such discretion left in the hands of th« teachers is liable to abuse. The memorial prayed the Ministers of Education to take the same into consideration, and so alter the regulations that the grievance may be removed.— It was resolved, after a short discussion, to sign the memorial. Prom Mrs Holloway, complaining or the school children running across her garden, and injuring the fruit trens, etc. —The Chairman said Mr Hughes had informed him that the children had been stopped from going into Mrs Holloway’s section.—lt was resolved to acknowledge the letter, and inform Mrs Holloway accordingly. From Mr Mcllraith, stating that with the Visiting Committee he had agreed upon a fence between his section and the school grounds, and was willing to pay half the cost of the same.—lt was resolved to leave the fence for a time as at present, as the gorse would , soon be a sufficient fence. HEAD MASTER’S REPORT. The Head Master, Mr Hughes, reported the average attendance for the s, past four weeks to have been 163.4. A > supply of paper for examination purposes was required, as also some ink. f|J It was resolved that they be supplied. visitors’ report. Mr Ward, on behalf of the visitors, reported that the school was in a satisfactory working condition. The attendance on the day of their visit was small, being only 161. Some of the outhouses needed attending to, as they were not in a very clean state. VISITORS. Messrs Farrell and Lodge were appointed visitors for the month. NEW CLASS ROOM. The Chairman and Messrs A. Sherratt and Lawson were, on the motion of Messrs Farrell and Ward, appointed a sub-Committee to get the necessary information in regard to cost, etc., of a new class room, to be supplied to tbo Board of Education. It is proposed to bnild the class room in the angle of (he infant room and present class room, parrallel with (ha latter, with a door op-ning into it from each and the window in the infant room which would be closed, to be put in tha east end of the same room. accounts. 7 Accounts amounting to L 3 16s were passed for payment and the Committee adjourned.
