GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Board was held in the Road Board Office oh Tuesday last. Present—Messrs R. H. Postlethwaite, J. Kelland, F. R. Flatman, and W*. Deßenzie. Mr Flatman was voted to the chair. [A letter was read from Mr Slark, apologising for non-attendance, owing to illness.] MINUTES. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. TENDERS. The following tenders were opened and considered : Contract No. 153—J. Fiefield, £7 10s ; R. Rae, £5 12a; J. H. Dean, £5; W. Fletcher, £4 10s (accepted). No. 154 W. J. Ennis, £22 18s 4d ; J. Webb, £l9 19s ; Tagg and Bray, £l4 15s ; J. Beckley, £l2 ; T. Markham, £ll 12a 6d ; M. Lawlor, £ll 5s (accepted). No. 155-J. Beckley, £lO ss; J. Fiefield, £8; R. Richards, £5 6s; M. Quaid, £5 103 (accepted). correspondence. The following correspondence was read and considered : From the Commissioner of Crown Lands, asking if reserve 1373 was required for pound purposes, as the section had been applied for as a site for a drillshed.—lt was resolved *hat the Commissioner be informed that the Board had no objection to offer against the land being granted for the purposes specified. From Messrs 0. G. Bradley und seven other ratepayers! of Hilton, requesting the Board to form certain roads or streets in ] the Hilton township. The petitioners I

stated that the work, if done, would be a great boon to the travelling public—lt was resolved that Margaret 3treet be formed, und the gully made passable. Queen street to be done us soon as the weather is suitable for concrete work.

From Mr A. Lysaght and other ratepatepayers, asking the Board to metal the Rhubarb Flat Road, from Fault's to Brown's gate, and also to repair the road between Four Peaks and Rhubarb Flat roads.—lt was resolved: "That the latter road be formed where nccefisary, and that the Rhubarb Flat road, be patched with broken metal," From H. Rawstorn, limaru, in reference to the road frontage to his section at Beautiful Valley.—Resolved: "That the Overseer report on the road at next meeting." From Messrs Annan and Frude, surface men to the Board, refuting the charges made against them at the Annual Meeting of the Board, by Messrs J. Gregan and R. H. Hammond. The Board thought the men were quite justified in their action in denying the charges brought against them. From the Property Tax Department, Wellington, asking the amount of rates levied, collectable, and collected for the year ended March 31st, 1885.—The Overj seer stated the matter had been attended to.

From the same, asking the Board to allow applicants for duties of Assessors to inspect the rolls, maps, etc.—This had been complied with. From Mr C. E. Sherratt, Returning Officer for the Road District, forwarding result of the late poll for election of members of the Board.

From the Clerk to the Town Board, asking if the Board were willing to have the footpath asphalted in front of the office.—lt was agreed that the Board should pay half the cost as specified. From Mr J. E. March, forwarding copies of the receipts and expenditure on Hospitals and Charitable Institutions under the control of the Board, for the year ended March 31st, 1885.—T0 be acknowledged. From the General Survey Office, Wellington, asking for a report on the works undertaken by the Board by authority of the Minister of Lands to open Crown Lands for sale up to the 30th June next. —The Board have not undertaken any works on Crown Lands.

From Clerk to the Geraldine County Council in reply to the Board rt the unsound state of the Orari Bridge, forwarding memorandum to the effect that the Geraldine Road Board be informed that the work cannot be entertained at present for want of funds, and suggesting that the Board should open the ford and keep the bridge open for light traffic.—lt was resolved that the Board patch the bridge and charge the Council with the rost.

From Mr D. Guldan, in reference to the fencing and renting of two road reserves at Orari.—Resolved;—" That the Board does not object to Mr Guldan running the fences along the frontage oi the shingle reserves, but would not allow any compensation when the Board require to enter the land." From Mr .Fitzgerald, in reference to the planting, etc., of the reserves.—The Overseer stated that Mr Fitzgerald was now at work putting in trees where required. From Mrs Millard, enclosing account for repairs to cottage rented by her from the Board.—lt was resolved that the account be not entertained, and that ten days' notice be given to Mrs Millard to pay the rent due ; failing this, thecottoge to be taken possession of.

From Mr John Aitken and 14 others, Kakahu, drawing the attention of the Board to the dangerous state of the main road from U.S. 19443 to R.S. 24261.From the description given, the Board were unable to find out where the road applied for is situated. From MrT. Hardcastle, junr., asking to have his name taken off the roll as late occupier of K.-S. 15540 and 7653.—T0 be attended to.

From Mr R. Hammond, Rhubarb Mat, in reference to the stones alongside his fence. —The Board were willing to pay at the rate of 6d per yard if Mr Hammond wbl stack the stones where directed. INTERVIEWS. Mr W. M. Moore interviewed the Board, asking if they had any objection to a portion of the pound reserve being used as a site for a drillshed.— The Board considered it to be within the jurisdiction o f the Town Board.—He also requested the Board to place a culvert across the road near Mr W. Patrick's.—The Overseer was instructed to see Mr Patrick. Mr Duncan interviewed the Board, and stated that he had received a notice from Mr Wigley to discontinue trespassing on his property. He requested the Board to obtain land for a road to give him access to hie place, as he was shut in by the river.—The members of the Board decided to visit the place on Monday next, with a view of obtaining a right-of-way from Mr Wigley by purchase.

Mrs Millard interviewed the Board and requested a remission of rent, but the Board could not entertain the request. Mr Tagg requesten that the Board make a road to Borne land he had purchased in Gapes' Vrlley. fie was willing to contribute one-third of the cost. —The Overseer was instructed to inspect the place and arrange with Mr i Tagg. KETURN OF COST OF BOUNDARY ROAD. The Overseer laid a report on the table of the cost of material and amount expended on the boundary Road between Temuka and Geraldine Road Districts, the total amount of which was £1286 9a. It was resolved that a deputation, consisting of the Chairman, Mr Kelland and the Overseer, wait on the Temuka Road Board at their next meeting. PROPOSED RATE. It was proposed by Mr Kelland, and seconded by Mr Postlethwaite—" That it is the intention of this Board, at its next meeting, to levy a rate of one halfpenny iu the pound on the rateable value of the district, und that the Overseer be instructed to prepare the rate roll for that purpose." EDUCATION RESERVES. It was resolved ou the motion of Mr Kelland, seconded by Mr Deßenzy—- " That this Board desires to cordially eudorse the action of the Geraldine County Council at its last sitting in initiating the question of future dealing with the Government and Educational Reserves" NOTICE OF MOTION. The following notice of motion was tabled by Mr Kelland : —" That it is my intention to move at the next meeting of J

the Board that the resolution carried at the Board's April meeting re Waihi Bush road be rescinded." overseer's report.

The Overseer's report whs read and the following resolutions passed thereon : —Be Scott's application : The Board declined to build a bridge, but would deepen the ford. Be the pound notice .board : It was resolved that as the public pound is situated within the Town District the Board did not see their way clear to do anything in the matter. Be the BaDgitata Station Road : It was decided to call for tenders for maintenance for a period of six months. ACCOUNTS. Accounts were passed to the amount tf £219 17s Id, and the Board then adjourned to the second Tuesday in July.
