CONCERT AT HILTON.

A concert was held in the schoolroom at Hilton on the evening of Friday, the 29th ult. The object in view was the collection of funds for the purchase of a harmonium, to be used at divine service in the schoolroom. It gives us great pleasure to say ihat it was in every sense a complete success. Performers were as plentiful as blackberries, and there was a large and appreciative audience to enjoy an attractive and varied programme. The moon was particularly accommodating, and to her we may attribute no inconsiderable share of the'success of (he venture. The performance commenced precisely at 8 p in. The Rev. George Barclay was voted to the chair, aud opened the proceedings with an exceedingly humorous and .appropriate address. He called their attention, amongst other things, to the length and variety of the programme. He thought that one item alone had been omitted that might under the circumstances prove a fitting finale, viz., the popular refrain, “We won’t go-, home till morning.” He thought that this sentiment would be fully exemplified if they intended to sit out the performance in its entirety, as drawn up before him. It was agreed that the programme be considerably abridged, and it was proposed that those volunteers whose assistance had been unavoidably dispensed with on the present occasion should he invited to render their services at another entertainment, to be given if possible at an early date in this district. The concert was then opened by a pianoforte duet by the Misses Mein, followed by Amateur Christy Minstrels, a rending by Dr. Fish, song by Mr Moore, reading by Mr Rooke, duct by the Misses Fish, song by Mrs. Nashan, song by Mr Myers, and reading by Mr. Leach. "This concluded the first part, of the entertainment. After a varied and attractive programme lind been gone thro’ —consisting of songs, duets, recitations, readings, and farces, the entertainment was brought to a close by a speech from Mr Rooke, in which a vote of thanks was proposed to the Chairman and the performers for their kindness in thus assisting in promoting the interests of the project of the concert. The Chairman replied briefly, and expressed great pleasure in having presided at so pleasant a gathering, and expressed a hope that he might be present at many more such in that township.
