TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of the Board mas held yesterday. Present —Messrs Talbot (chairman), Quinn, and Ensor. Mr McMahan attended to ask the Board to compensate him for work he had done on the Rangitafa. ResoWed that he be paid at the rate of Is 6d per'yard., Mr Benbow attended in re the cutting made through his land at Langridge’s bridge, offering to take LlO as a compensation in full, and releasing the Board fromany and all responsibility in future. . The surveyor was instructed to inspect the nlaee, and if filling in will servo the purpose, to do so, or put in a culvert if nccessaiy. From Mr Johnston, in re conveyance of land from Mr Gladstone. The Board resolved that Mr Gladstone be written to, stating that it appears that by the Crown grant there is a reserve for a road through his land in the same position as that purchased by the Board, and if such is the fact, the Board must be refunded the amount paid to him. From the Levels Road Board, stating their inability to help to build the Opihi bridge from want of funds.

Mv Quinn proposed, Mr Hayhurst seconded, and it was carried, “ That the Temnka Road Board undertake to construct a hr id co over the Opihi river provided the Levels Road Board give sufficient guarantee by deed to pav to this Board half the cost c£ the same within 12 months from the completion of the bridge.” From Mr R. A. Barker, with reference to payment for lands taken over by the Board for forming, certain roads. Resolved that so soon as Messrs Tate and Ross certify to the title, the amount (L6O) he paid. Mr Barker, An conformity with his notice ot motion, moved —“ That, in reference to the action taken by the Government in threatening to withhold subsidies from this Board until the amount of L3o—expended in entertaining Sir George Grey last year—is refunded, the. Board, while admitting the Government’s’rig 1 :t to make the claim, consider that they are not authorised thereby to withhold a subsidy, and as this Board arc of opinion that, having to take the place of a Borough Council where none exist, sthey were perfectly -justified in equity in voting the sum referred to. To put the hooks right, however, the Board resolve to refund the said sum to the general account from the forfeited deposit account, any balance remaining, and all forfeited deposits in future, to be handed over to the Timaru Hospital, or to such local institution as the Board may from time to time direct.” On being secondad by Mr Ensor, it was carried. In reference to the difficulty with the transfer of Mr Gladstone’s land to the Board, it was resolved that Messrs Bruce and Wilkins he written to, stating that, the Board’s solicitor refuses to draw a conveyance in re Gladstone’s road in consequence of their diagram pot showing the starting point described therein.
