SYDNEY AND NEWCASTLE COAL RESOURCES AMPLE STRIKE BREACH WIDENS REFUSAL OF CONFERENCE ■ V By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 6.30 p.m. Sydney, Dec. 22. All colliers trading between Sydney and Newcastle are to be involved in the seamen’s strike. Coal resources, however, are ample for most industries until after the new year. The Australian Steamship Owners’ Federation informed the Australian Council of Trades Unions at Melbourne that it would not agree to a conference to discuss a settlement of the strike. Moreover, the federation had decided to demand that seamen should have licenses. These decisions have put an end to any efforts on the part of the Council of Trades Unions to intervene on behalf of the striking seamen. Mr. R. G. Menzies, Federal AttorneyGeneral, states that the total number of vacancies filled by non-unionists on coastal vessels now in commission is as follows: Sydney, 29 per cent.; Melbourne, 55 per cent.; Brisbane, 73 per cent; Port Adelaide, 57 per cent.; Newcastle, 32 per cent.
