OKAIAWA CHURCH FUNDS
SUCCESSFUL EVENING HELD. 7 An enjoyable evening was spent on Tuesday at the home of Mrs. Williams, Okaiawa, to raise funds for the Presbyterian Church. Cards, competitions and community singing with Miss Williams at the piano passed the time pleasantly. Mrs. W. Johnston won the first prize for the euchre and Mr. Bruce Cameron won the men’s prize after a play-off with Mr. A. Ward and Mr. J. Shearer. Miss E. Williams won a putting competition. Those present were Mesdames Struthers, Ward, Williams, Johnston, Penny, A. Sutherland, J. Shearer, R.' Shearer, Evetts and Houlahan and Misses Washer, Oldfield, Lindsay, F. Sutherland, L. Robertson and E. and R. Williams. At the conclusion of the evening Mrs. J. Shearer thanked Mrs. Williams for the enjoyable evening and for the use of her home. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Te Roti: The August meeting was presided over by Mrs. McAsey, who welcomed a number of visitors, including Mesdames Kaye and Smith, president and secretary of the Taranaki federation, arid Mrs. Larcom, president of the Whareroa institute. Mrs. Hitchcock was welcomed as a new member. The competition was for the best article made from two skeins of wool. The winners were Mrs. Fowler 1, Mrs. Grierson 2 and Mrs. Stokes and Mrs. Grierson equal 3. It was decided to alter the meeting day from the fourth Friday to the fourth Tuesday in each month. Mrs. Bloor reported on the group committee meeting at Hawera. It was decided to take a court at the Eltham spring flower show, provided the exhibition is for arts and crafts. Mrs. Fowler reported on the recent Dominion conference at Auckland. Mrs. Kaye gave an address on the aims of the Women’s Institute movement. Votes of thanks were accorded Mrs. Kaye for her address and Mesdames Bloor and Fowler for their reports.
WOMEN’S DIVISION
Hurford Road: At the monthly meeting Mrs. J. Thomas presided over an attendance of 24. A knitting competition was judged by Mrs. P. Johnson and won by Mrs. W. Maloney. A competition for the best darned sock will be held next month. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Spence and Hoffman. Hunter Road: An afternoon social was held in the Hunter Road hall. The winning table in a five hundred tournament was occupied by Mesdames Bloor, Carlson and Cleaver. Winners of consolation prizes were Mesdames McLaren, Brisco and Swindlehurst. Afternoon tea was served, the cake being cut by the president, Mrs. Carter, who thanked visitors from other branches for their attendance. Mrs. Cocker, Eltham, replied for the visitors. A competition for a cushion given by Mrs. McLaren was won by Mrs. Grierson, Te Roti.
