TAXATION OF GOLD
REQUEST FOR ITS REMOVAL. QUESTION IN PARLIAMENT. (By Wire— Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, Last Night. A request to the Government to remove the export duty on gold was made in the House of Representatives to-night by Mr. H. S. S. Kyle (Co., Riccarton). Mr. Kyle gave notice to ask whether in view of the tax on gold being a most dangerous fiscal precedent establishing the principle of a tax on production” the Government would introduce legislation this session to abolish it. Mr. A. M. Samuel (Thames) mentioned the same subject, claiming that the imposition of the duty had been the means of discouraging the investment of English capital in New Zealand mining and causing distress among workers. He s?.id that a similar tax had been lifted in Canada.
