SAILORS’ COMFORT

FUNDS FOR SEAMEN’S REST. SUCCESSFUL MART DAY HELD. For the comfort of sailors at the New Plymouth port an appeal is made each year to raise funds for the Seamens Rest and a mart day conducted under the. auspices of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union in Whiteley hall yesterday met with an excellent response, showing that the public appreciate the worthiness of the cause. The funds benefited to the extent of nearly £25, a very satisfactory amount, slightly exceeding expectations., t Donations to the mart poured in- all day, both in cash and in goods. From the appearance of the stalls it was scarcely surprising that their supplies met with a ready sale.’ They were well displayed and attractively prepared. At the end of the afternoon, however, the long trestle tables were almost bare. The president of the managing committee is Miss G. A. Drew. Mrs. R. J. Deare is treasurer and Mrs. C. O. Berg secretary. In charge of the stalls were: Cakes, Mesdames J. A. Valentine and L. Collins; needlework, Miss A. King and Mesdames A. Malcolm and F. Therkleson; produce, Mrs. C. O. Berg; provisions, Mesdames G. Loveridge and A. H. Bailey; flower, Miss N. Hunt. Arrangements for morning and afternoon tea were in the hands of Mrs. P. Wells, vsho was assisted by a large band of helpers.
