Those at the- winning table .were Mesdames E.. Clare, W. Gibb, Burgess and O. Manley and consolation prizes were won by Mesdames R. S. Allen, Hilmer, J.,D. McKay and Duss. , ' Mrs. E. L. Abbott, Kaponga, was hostess at bridge ■ on Thursday afternoon. Mrs. C. C. Stanners Won the prize for the highest score and Mrs. A. J. Mac--Pherson won. the consolation prize. Among those present- were Mesdames E. P. Hill, A. Craig, P. de Launay, J. I. R. Gray (Kaponga), Dufaur (Wellington),A. A. Stewart, J. Hessell (Kaponga) and S. W. Crawford and Misses S. Carncross and Renshaw (Auckland). ■ Alice Penhall-was honoured with a gift evening at the Eltham Salvation Hall on Wednesday on her approaching ri?arriage. Many parcels of gifts were presented. ' Mr. H. Jenkins replied , on behalf of Miss Penhall and Mr. J. Penhall also spoke on behalf of his daugh--ter. The evening was spent in games and musical items, Adjutant Smith pre-, siding. Mr. F. Lynch supervised the amusements. Giri Guides. ■ Miss A. Slater was appointed Brownie leader of the Eltham Brownies at a meeting of the Eltham Girl Guide Committee on' Wednesday. The resignation of Mrs. J. Mitchell from this position was received with regret. Mrs. Mitchell was elected secretary and treasurer. A vote of appreciation of the assistance given by Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Foord in connection with the birthday party at Hawera was passed. It was decided to accept an offer from •the flower show committee for the Guides to dispense refreshments at both shows. A Surprise Party. .

A surprise party for Miss Rene Neilson, who will leave Eltham for Australia shortly, was held at the residence of her aunt, Mrs. A. Beesley, on Thursday. Competition winners were Miss Dale Mancer (musical hats), Mr. J. D. Robertson (most popular hat) and Mr. L, Hayr cock (best dressed peg). Mrs. Beesley’s group won a singing competition. Community singing was held and items were given by Miss Dale Mancer (piano), Mrs. Neilson and Mrs. Beesley (duet), Mr. L. Haycock (song), Mrs. A. Beesley (song), Mr. A. Beesley (song) and Miss L. Carman (song). Mr. Haycock expressed the regret of Miss Neilson’s friends at her departure and expressed the good wishes of her friends. He referred to her popularity in the district and hoped she would soon return. Mr. Beesley replied for his niece..
