MANAIA SCHOOL

MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE. GOOD PROGRESS REPORTED. The monthly meeting of the Manaia school committee was held on Wednesday night. Those present were Mr. O. T. Parry (chairman), the Rev. R. Miller, Messrs. J. Crompton, P. Instone, V. Adlam, B. Bloor, H. Silby, J. Laursen and G. Butler. The headmaster (Mr. J. Browning) reported that the primary and secondary rolls for the month were respectively 216 and 48. Tire average attendances were 200.2 and 44.6. The attendance had been reduced by wet weather and sickness. Tire school was visited by the inspectors, Messrs. Haslam and Henry. The term examinations were in progress and results were satisfactory. Visits had been made by boys of the secondary department to the experimental farm and to Henwood Bros.’ farm near Oeo. The aim was to give the nupils practical knowledge of faun husbandry and pasture management. The secondary Rugby fifteen defeated the second fifteen of Hawera Technical High School by 9 points to 3. The primary girls’ A team played several basketball matches with neighbouring schools, results being gratifying. . , Entries for garden and Boys and Girls Club competitions were coming in well. Interest - was good, especially in the calf competition. The show entries realised over £9 in prize money. The pupils received 55 per cent, of this. The instructor of the manual department (Mr. W. Entwistle) reported that attendances for the month had been well maintained. In all classes the work was progressing steadily, standard. 6 pupils having completed the preliminary exercises, and now being occupied mainly on models of their own choice. An introductory farming course for standard 6 had been commenced. This course covered building construction, repairs, preservation and maintenance of existing buildings etc. By this. means it was hoped that next, year for at least the first term the secondary boys would be enabled to spend more time on the practical side of the subject. Miss M. Helyer, instructress of the cookery department, reported that the new electric cooker installed at the centre in May had greatly facilitated the smooth working of the classes and widened the scope of the instruction. Mr. Pany reported that the Arbor Day celebrations were held in the presence of a fair attendance of parents and were very successful. Messrs. L. S. Mackie and L. C. Harrison were accorded votes of thanks • for delivering addresses to the children, and the women were thanked for supplying afternoon tea. A letter was received from the Taranaki Education Board notifying that the board acceded to the committee’s request for a grant of £5 to pay for the services of the arts and crafts part-time instructress. The committee congratulated the head-, master and staff on the success achieved at the Hawera show.

The matter of procuring cricket material was left in the hands of the chairman and headmaster. It was decided to procure two yards of gravel for repair work on footpaths and purchase a supply of seeds for the school gardens. Messrs Parry and Butler were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month.

To give the secondary department boys an opportunity of making concrete models it was decided to purchase a supply of shingle and cement. At a meeting of the dental clinic committee the chairman presented the balance sheet in connection with the concert held in aid of the clinic funds, showing a profit of £l3 3s 6d. It was decided to send a letter of thanks to Mr. F. Silver and party for presenting the major part of the concert and to Mr. and Mrs. A. Bonetti for assistance.
