ODDFELLOWS’ CARD SOCIAL. There was a good representation of members of both' lodges on Tuesday night at the Okaiawa town hall, when Lodge 1.0.0.F.N.Z. entertained Kiwi Rebekah Lodge (Hawera) at a social gathering. The entertainment took the form of a progressive 500 challenge evening, and keen competition ensued for the honour of winning the first challenge match. Kiwi Rebekah was the winner by 32 games to 26. Dancing was enjoyed during the latter part of the evening, and supper was served by the Okaiawa women. Mrs. J. Shearer was hostess at a very enjoyable party on Wednesday evening in aid of bazaar funds for the Presbyterian Church. Cards and competitions the time very pleasantly. Among those present were Mesdames- Williams, R. Shearer, Edwards, Warnock, Penny, Sutherland, Close, W. Johnson, K. J. Watson, Good, J. Shearer and Misses Lindsay, Sutherland and Washer. The winners of the cards were Mrs. Williams and Mr. Warnock and the competitions were won by Miss M. Lindsay and Ken. Shearer. At the conclusion the Rev. K. J. Watson thanked the host and hostess for the enjoyable evening and for the use of their home. On Wednesday evening a lecture and lantern slide entertainment of great educational value to school children and adults was given -by Mr. Foston at. the Okaiawa hall. The principal subjects discussed were goldmining and greenstone, and the extinct Moa bird. Personal. Miss M. Guy, Stanwajy, has been the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Don Blair. Mrs. Naim, Feilding, is visiting Okaiawa as the guest of her daughter, Mrs. D. Blair. Mr. and Mrs. Newman, who have been away on holiday, have returned home.. . Miss Bankhead, who has been on a visit to Mrs. Thomas, has returned. Mr. and Mrs. Johnston are the guests of Mrs. D. Blair. HAWERA GOLF CLUB. TEAM TO PLAY WAVERLEY. The following players have been selected to represent the Hawera Golf Club in a match against Waverley at Waverley to-day; C. Harrison, C. McDonald, D. C. Ryan, T. F. McKenzie, P. O. Veale, R. C. Hay-Mackenzie, A. J. Black, W P. McAnerin, F. B. Wylds, D. Lennon, W. J. Bright, H. P. Vinnicombe, E. L. Braithwaite, R. J. Gordon, P. McCarthy, R. Claringbold. GRAND THEATRE, HAWERA. DOUBLE-STAR PROGRAMME. An outstanding double-star programme will be shown at to-night’s performance at the Grand Theatre, Hawera, the first film being a picturisation under the same name of the famous book “Lorna Doone,” the roles of Jan Ridd and Lorna Doone being taken by John Loder and Victoria Hopper. Phyllis Barry, opposite David Manners, plays the leading feminine part in the monogram mystery thriller “Moonstone,” the second attraction, whilst the initial episode of the new serial, “The Red Rider,” will also be ’ screened.

HAWERA OPERA HOUSE. MUSICAL COMEDY “ROBERTA.” R.K.O. Radio’s production “Roberta,” which will be shown for the second performance of its three-night season at the Hawera Opera House to-night, is a scintillating musical comedy starring Irene Dunne, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. The theme of the story is based on the situation when a footballer falls heir to a fashionable Paris gown shop, and his attempts to burst into the world of fashion in company with his friend, a band leader. Jerome Kerr, well-known song writer, features his well-known “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,” together with other musical “hits” specially written for the picture. “Roberta” was directed by William Seiter, whilst among the cast are included such well known favourites as Helen Westley, Victor Varconi, Claire Dodd, Ferdinand Munier and Adrian Rosley.
