The promoters of “Surprise Packet of 1935” have already received excellent public support in their venture, the bookings already being very heavy for the two-night season which, incidentally, cannot be extended. Miss Marjorie McLaughlin, the producer, has introduced some ballet settings entirely new to Hawera, the “Human Spider Web” in particular requiring considerable preparation. Four men spent considerable time in erecting the set, great care having to be taken to ensure that its strength was sufficient to bear the weight of four people. The stage staff has been working daily in preparation for the initial performance, and a full dress rehearsal over the week-end would put the finishing touches on what was already a polished company of 100 artists. Many of those who appeared in the recent “Aladdin” pantomime would again provide the sparkling libretto which is an outstanding feature of “The Surprise Packet of 1935,” the comedy parts being in the capable hands of Messrs. Newton Mitchell and W. Carter. Bookings have already been received from most parts of South Taranaki, and it is expected packed houses will greet both performances. “The Surprise Packet of 1935” will be preceded by the screening of “Romance in Manhattan,” starring Ginger Rogers, the combined show taking place at the Hawera Opera House on Tuesday and Wednesday next.
