METHODIST BAZAAR
WOMEN’S AUXILIARY EFFORT. The Hawera Women’s Auxiliary conducted a successful bazaar in aid of funds for the Methodist missionary union in the Wesley Hall on Wednesday afternoon and evening. The union, which does extensive missionary work among the Maoris and Solomon Islanders, supports nurses and sisters in the medical field and teachers in educational movements, besides financing buildings and supplies and operating a steamer and wireless station.
Wednesday’s sale of work by the Hawera auxiliary was as successful as those, conducted in recent years, and it is expected the auxiliary will be able to contribute liberally to the funds of the union as a result.
Stall-holders were: Work, Mesdames Cressey sen., E. J. Yearbury and W. T. Johnson; cakes, Mesdames Rowe and Hurrell; produce, Mesdames Tozer (2) and Rae; flowers, Mrs. Evans; “pound” stall, Mesdames Hartmann and Westwood; bran tubs, Mrs. Barron; tea rooms, Mesdames Grindrod, Knightbridge and Reader; sweets, Bible class girls; competitions, Bible class boys. Miss Bates, the secretary, supervised the arrangements.
During the afternoon a programme of orchestral music was provided by Mr. H. N. Lester and party, a short concert programme in the evening being given by Mr. Rushton (songs), Miss Buckley and Mr. Rushton (duets), Misses Elsie Hartmann and Gwen Archbold (duets), and Miss E. Game (recitations).
