TWO DEATHS REPORTED. News was received at Waverley on Wednesday of the death of Mr. George Howie, Morrinsville. Mr. Howie, who was a brother of Mr. Alfred Howie, Gloag Street, Waverley, was very well known and highly respected by the older residents of the Waverley district, 'having farmed the property known as “Strathmore” in his young manhood, after which he took up land in the Waikato, where his efforts were very successful. Mr. Howie leaves a widow, a sister of Mr. J. H. Mathieson, Chester Street, and a grown-up family of sons and a daughter. The death took place on Thursday morning of Mrs. Bourne, Waverley, aged 57 years. She was a sister of Mrs. F. Ramsbottom, Patea., Mrs. Bourne, who lived in the Waverley district during the early part of her married life, is survived by her husband and a grown-up family of four (laughters. Mr. J. H. Mathieson and Mr. A. Howie left cm Wednesday for Morrinsville. Mrs.'H. P. Metcalfe, who had been in the Auckland district for the school holiday, returned at the week-end. Mr. White, of the staff of the Waverley public school, who spent the holiday at Rotorua and Auckland, has returned. Miss Wallis, also of the school staff, has returned. Mrs. Bell, who has been staying with her daughter, Mrs. P. G. Bremer, Lake Farm, left on Wednesday for Wanganui, where she will take up residence. Mrs. Bremer accompanied- her mother and will spend some time there. Mrs. Spencer, Matangi, is spending a few days at Waverley with her brother, Mr. F. Mitchell, and Mrs. Mitchell. AWATUNA CARD PARTY. HOCKEY MATCHES AT AUROA. Although the night was rough, a successful flag five hundred evening was held at the home of Mfs. W. A. Lind, Awatuna, on Wednesday to further the cause of Princess Hazel in the carnival contest. An enjoyable time was spent, and the winning table was occupied by Mrs. Anderson and Messrs. Edgar and Roy Pepperell and Wright. A competition was won by Mr. M. Granville. Supper was provided. On Wednesday afternoon the Auroa men’s hockey team played Manaia and was defeated by three to one. The Auroa girls’ hockey team played Manaia at Auroa on Wednesday afternoon and was defeated by three to nil. Misses S. Gopperth (1) and N. Gopperth (2) were the scorers. Messrs. C. Davies and C. Harding refereed; Miss West injured her knee. ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS A euchre party and dance in aid of the Kanihi Pa funds will be held in the Matapu hall on June 10. The Okaiawa Football Club will hold a euchre party and dance at Okaiawa to-morrow. It will be the fourth of a series and will be for the benefit of an injured footballer. The Egmont A. and P. Association invites tenders for the lease of paddocks on the Hawera showgrounds. Duffill and Gibson invite tenders for the erection of a cottage on Beaconsfield Road, Stratford.
