SURPRISES IN GOLF

ELTHAM TOURNAMENT DALE FAILS TO QUALIFY D. V. SUTHERLAND BEATEN MEULI’S COURSE RECORD Failure of H. P. Dale to qualify in the championship, a first-round defeat of D. V. Sutherland, reigning Taranaki champion, and a course record, were features of the first two days play in the Central Taranaki golf championship, conducted on the Eltham club’s links on Saturday and yesterday. The course record was established by M. Meuli, Te Ngutu, who went round in a brilliant 70 in the first round of the championship yesterday. Leo Quin, in a four-ball, unofficially established a record of 70 some time ago, but Meuli s is the first recorded in competition. He finished four up on bogey. Meuli was defeated in the second round by Chong. Dale’s failure to qualify caused something of a sensation among followers of the game. He was well below form for the first nine holes and some of his shots were extremely poor for a player of his ebss. On the second half he improved considerably and on a count back, might possibly have gained inclusion in the 16. A draw, however, was made. Scoring somewhere about 85, Sutherland failed to hold off the promising L. Gibson, Eltham, who did an 81. Neither player showed anything like his best form, but some wonderful chipping by Gibson turned the tide. When Gibson was dormy two, Sutherland won the 17th in four to five, and a great spoon second on the 18th fairway looked likely to give him an advantage. The ball, however, kicked through, and Gibson ran up close with a chip from 20 yards away. Sutherland was short witfi his chip and he failed to sink a six-feet putt, Gibson making no mistake with a four. Another feature of the first round was the defeat of the entire Quin family. Leo, whose form recently has been good, was a popular favourite in the event, but against Chong he could not withstand the New Plymouth player’s shot making. The veteran A. Stewart carried too many guns for A. J. Quin and J. Stewart, a young Wellington player—no relation to the other—was too steady for Frank Quin. Though Meuli established a course record, he had to work hard all the way to beat the 16-year-old Tommy Gibson, who slipped a little in the second half. Meuli’s card was as follows:— Out: 4,4, 4,3, 4,5, 4,4, 3—35. In: 4,4, 4,3, 3,5, 4,4, 4—35. Par is:— Out: 3,4, 4,3, 4,4, 4,5, 3—34.. In: 4,5, 4,3, 4,5, 4,4, 4,-37. Gibson took 37 out and 42 home, Meuli standing 1 up at the turn. In the afternoon Meuli dropped, form considerably, and his inexperience was a determining factor against Chong. Both, as a matter of fact, played poorly, but the ever-steady Chong showed his capabilities towards the end. At the 12th, the game was square, and a poor approach putt by Meuli at the 13th gave Chong, who approached to within a foot, a win in three to four. The 14th was halved when Meuli failed with a fourfooter, and Chong won the 15th and 16th to take the match. Meuli developed a slice in his tee shots and Chong generally had a 20-yard advantage from the tee. Where, against Sutherland, Larry Gibson saved himself by chip shots, against the young and capable Wylds, his chief ability was from the tee. His average length in driving was 240 to 250 yards and he hit some terrific shots, all of them straight. An early advantage helped Gibson considerably, for Wylds showed out towards the end of the game and five holes just before the 14th were halved in par figures. Gibson will meet a steady player in Chong in the semifinal, but on form he is going to be difficult to beat and if he wins he is likely to win the title. The Wills-Abbott second round encounter was a dramatic affair, a string of three by Abbott in the middle of the round giving him a lead of three up at the 14th. Wills won the 15th, 16th and 17th and going to the 18th the match was square. Faced with a nine-feet putt for a half, Wills just failed to hole out. Abbott played well, particularly in the first half.

The second round battle between the Stewarts was an in-and-out affair. J. Stewart took an early lead of three up at tire fifth, but A. Stewart fought back well and, though figures in the second half were not sensational, still the game was a notable display of fighting.

The semi-finals this morning promise to be interesting and the title winner will have to turn on good figures. In view of his experience, Chong is quite likely to” defeat Gibson. The AbbottStewart contest should also be interesting, with the odds slightly in favour of Abbott.

Both Saturday and yesterday the weather was perfect and the condition of the links deserves every praise. The ground was heavy and holding yesterday but the greens were all exceptionally fine and the 'addition of two new holes made the whole layout a good test of ability. The tournament is being conducted with efficiency and the club officials have been commended on their work.

Eighty-four competitors took part in the qualifying round. Although the ground was somewhat heavy in the morning the greens played splendidly and some excellent golf with many good scores resulted.

Abbott was in good form and topped the list of qualifiers with a gross score of 73. L. T. Quin came next with 75 and Sutherland was a close third with 76. A remarkable round of 78 was played by T. Gibson, one of Eltham’s youngest players. lan Wylds, another of Eltham’s younger players, qualified well at 79. Meuli qualified along with G. M. Chong at 80. Four tied for 16th position and in the draw R. Wills was included in the first 16. Dale and C. E. Hollis were unable to get into the first 16 but were amongst the leaders of the second list.
