DR. YOUNG APPOINTED

RETURNED SOLDIERS’ DELEGATE. At the monthly meeting of the executive committee of the South Taranaki Returned Soldiers’ Association at Hawera on Friday night, the president, Dr. A. M. Young, was unanimously appointed as the association delegate to the Dominion conference to open at Wellington on June 19. A report was presented concerning action taken in respect to four claims for pensions during the month. Four new members were admitted to the association. Further arrangements were made concerning the first quarterly meeting of the association to be held subsequent to the Dominion conference at which the report of the delegate is to be presented. It was decided to hold another reunion social, and a sub-committee was appointed to make the preliminary arrangements. AN ELABORATE PRODUCTION. “VANESSA" SEASON AT HAWERA. One of the season’s most elaborate screen productions, “Vanessa,” a romantic drama featuring Helen Hayes, Robert Montgomery and Otto Kruger, will commence to-day at the Hawera Opera House at 2 pm. a season of one matinee and two nights. The love story of Vanessa is from the widely read novel by Hugh Walpole dealing with the spectacular Herries family. With the three principals is an exceptional cast including Lewis Stone, May Robson, Henry Stephenson, Violet Kemble-Cooper, Donald Crisp, Jessie Ralph and Agnes Anderson. The picture was produced for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer by David O. Selznick and directed by William K. Howard. GENERAL ITEMS. Big Increase in Births. An increase of almost 100 per cent, in the number of births during the month is the chief feature of the Hawera vital statistics for May. With the figures for May, 1934, in parentheses, the figures are: Births 27 (14), deaths 8 (7), marriages 15 (9). Hawera Dental Clinic Work. During May pupils of the Hawera Convent, Ararata, Fraser, Meremere, Ohangai, Turuturu, Tokaora, Mokoia, and Whakamara made 147 attendances at the Hawera dental clinic, and a total of 320 operations was performed. Douglas Social Credit Address. An interesting address was given in the Ohangai hall on Friday by Colonel S. J. E. Closey on Doiiglas Social Credit, those present showing keen interest. At the close of the address Colonel Closey was bombarded with questions, which he answered in a clear and lucid manner. A vote of thanks to the speaker was moved by Mrs. G. W. Williams and carried by acclamation. Afternoon tea was served by the members of the Mere-mere-Ohangai branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union. Rainfall at Manaia. Rainfall at Manaia during May totalled 7.20 inches. For this year to date the total was 27.34 inches. ■
