Miss Bennett, travelling secretary for the Young Helpers’ League, is visiting Hawera and district and at present she is. staying with Mrs. Stephenson.

Mrs. A. J. Corrigan, who has been visiting her mother and sister, Mrs. Purser arid Mrs. R. R. Rees at Wellington, returned home yesterday. Mrs. H. M. Caselberg and family left during the week-end to spend three weeks with Mr. Caselberg’s father at Masterton. Miss N. Nowell, now of Auckland, is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. V. W. Nowell, The Lakes. Mrs. Meredith- left last Friday evening for Auckland to join the Blue Star liner Trojan Star for England on a holiday tour of several months. Miss Smith, of Collins Street, will accompany her on. the journey .to England. Miss I. E. Crutch left last week for Auckland en route to Sydney. < The Misses Buchanan, South Road, have Mrs. Carey, Masterton, .as their guest. Mrs. K. Kirk, who has been Mrs. H. R. Kemp’s guest for the last few weeks, returned to New Plymouth last weekend. /

Mrs. R. H. Leece is on holiday in the Auckland and North Auckland districts. Mrs. Baigent senr., who was Mrs. R. P. Baigeht’s guest, has returned to Tauranga.

Mrs. . A. E. Wills has returned from a few weeks’ visit to Palmerston North, where she was Mrs. J. Muggeridge’s guest. Miss Dorothy Gray returned to Hawera last week after having spent three months’ holiday in the Marlborough sounds, where she was the guest of Miss Lorraine Mills.

Mrs. H. R. Kemp wore a smartly cut figured georgette ensemble when she entertained a number of friends at tea on Wednesday afternoon in honour of her guest, Mrs. K. Kirk, New Plymouth. Mrs. Kirk’s frock was fashioned in pinjf and green-toned crepe suede with insets of plain matching green. Large bowls of dahlias made attractive sitting room decorations. The guests at tea included Mesdames D. G. Smart, A. K. North, G.*J. Bayley, J. B. Rowe, H. S. McWilliam, H. W. Swinburn, H. M. Besley, W. M. Winks, H. M. Caselberg, W. Fendall, G. W. Powdrell, H. M. Yeung, J. Stewart, S. A. Chisholm, W. M. Egglestone and L. A. Ablett. ■ On -Friday evening last the Hawera Rotarians entertained their womenfolk at dinner and afterwards at an enjoyable party. The evening was a special one, there usually being only,one ladies’ evening during the year, and the innovation was a' happy thought of the president’s. The guests were welcomed by the president, and on their behalf “Mrs.” Allwright replied. “Mrs.” Allwright’s make-up was so realistic it had more than a few of the women guessing as to who was the fluent orator and caused much merriment. Songs by Mr. Richard Maunder and Mr. W. G. Simpson, a movie film on Rotary world work, shown by Mr. E. M. Bardsley, and several musical numbers by the Roland juvenile sextette, who were visiting the town in the course of a world tour, provided an excellent evening’s entertainment.

Those present included the president’s wife, Mrs. F. W. Horner (who wore a frock of mulberry-toned silk faille, with metallic silver embroiders), and Mesdames W. J. Bright, E. M. Bardsley, A. K. Fyson, W. M. Eggleston, J. H. Fletcher, W. G. Strange, J. Houston, R. S. Allwright, J. Duffill, P. O. Veale, E. Dixon, J. W. J. Harding, W. G. Simpson, W. G. Walkley, L. A. Ablett, W. W. Gibson and Misses M. Bright, Bennett (Wellington) and F. Thomson.

Hawera Croquet Club Closing Day. Owing to adverse weather conditions it was decided to hold the closing of the Hawera croquet lawns for the 1934-5 season and the presentation of the trophies and prizes won during the year in the’ large reception room at the Hawera Women’s Club, and the event was enjoyed. There was. a splendid attendance of members and a few visitors. After the presentations and afternoon tea those present enjoyed a song by Mrs. W. F. Buist, and two novelty competitions were won by Mesdames J. H. Fletcher and Buist. The president of the club, Mrs. W. G. Strange, Mrs. A. E. Stevens (secretary) and Miss M. C. Power were presented with handsome bouquets, presented by Mrs. Buist. The .president also asked the tea committee, Mesdames J. Ekdahl and W. F. Buist and Miss Power, to accept a little gift each in appreciation of their work, which made croquet days a pleastfie as well as a sport. Each of the members returned thanks to Mrs. Strange. Croquet Players Visit Wanganui. A team of six players from the South I Taranaki Croquet Association visited Wanganui on Tuesday and placed a team of six selected from the Wanganui Croquet Association on the St. John’s lawns. They were welcomed by Mr. Harrison, secretary to the Wanganui Association, and by Mrs. Crawford, secretary of the St. John’s Club. Mr. A. J. Gibbs, Alton, and Mr. J. Clague, Manaia, spoke for the visiting association’s team, who were the guests of St. John’s Club at luncheon and afternoon tea.
