STRATFORD CLUB’S REQUEST. PORTION OF STREET SOUGHT. The use of a “dead-end” of Ariel'Street between Cloton Road and the Patea River bank beside the Stratford Bowling Club’s green was sought by the club in a letter supported by a deputation received by the Stratford Borough Council last night. The club, it was explained, desired to develop a green on the area to supplement it? present green. The council deferred, the matter till the next meeting. ( The club asked for the use of the area till such time as the council might contemplate the formation of the street. The club felt that provided access to Gardner’s swimming pool was retained the presence of an educational reserve on the side of the blind end would obviate any necessity for opening the road for many years. “I do not think the proposal should be entertained,” the Mayor said. “The club had a section next to its green which it sold a while ago; had it kept the section there would have been no need to ask for this area.”

A deputation consisting of Messrs. A. H. R. Amess and C. W. Higgs waited on the council in support of the letter. Mr. Amess said the club considered it desirable to have extra greens so that more players could be accommodated and so that the main green could be given a spell from time to time. The area was used as a paddock for school children’s ponies but there would be no need to effect that arrangement and the club would, during the establishment of the green, greatly improve the appearance of the area.

Mr. Higgs told the Mayor that the section that the club sold would not have been nearly large enough for the purpose. • , It would have to be understood that if at any future time the council wanted the street there would be no compensation claim on the council, it was stated. No buildings would be put on the area, Mr. Amess said. “But there might be a lot of heartburning if we, or a future council, tried to get the area back,” the Mayor said. After the deputation left the Mayor suggested that the matter be deferred till next meeting so that councillors could make themselves „ conversant with the position. , „ “I do not see any need for delay, Cr. R. R. Curtis remarked. “Suppose 'some time somebody donated a bridge to' be placed oyer the Patea River there,” the Mayor suggested.

Cr. Curtis:. Nobody is going to give us a bridge. The Mayor: Perhaps not, but we might want the road for any purpose. Cr. W. P. P. Gordan: If a traffic bridge were placed in that area I think it would go where the present footbridge is at the end of Cordelia Street and I hope in that event that the footbridge will be used in Windsor Park. BOWLERS’ TOURNAMENT. PLAY AT STRATFORD CLUB. An interesting tournament was played at the week-end on the Stratford bowling green, when trophies donated by Mr. L. Feek were Competed fpr by progressive pairs. Twenty-four members took part, the winners being: Skips, W., Harris, run-ner-up, S. Swing; leads, D. R. Turnbull, runner-up, L. J. Furrie.
