The Unemployment Board, replying to the council’s request that 12 men be left to finish work under way, said that as the rates payable at the aerodrome were slightly higher than those paid under No. 5 the board did not wish to penalise the men by denying them the aerodojne work, but it would raise no.objection to the council’s retaining the men should they desire it The pastor of the Assemblies of God asked that a stand be granted his organisation near the post office on Saturday and Sunday nights. The Sunday meeting would ’not interfere with that of . the Salvation Army, as it was not proposed to starj; 'until the Army had finished. “I fl-iink we have enough in the Salvation Army,” the Mayor said. Cr. Trotter: I favour toleration in these matters, and cannot see any objection - The Mayor: Would you have an objection if they met opposite your place? Cr. Trotter: Yes. I want to say The Mayor; You have no seconder, and cannot speak. “I have a right to speak,” Cr. Trotter continued. “I can remember I had a brush with Cr. Harkness over a similar matter once before. I think it was Mormons then.”

His motion lapsed for want of a seconder. The request was granted in respect of Regan or Fenton Streets west. The Mayor said the meetings would be under the supervision of the borough inspector. The committee of the Stratford Band complimented Cr. Trotter on his services as. a member of the committee, and asked that another council representative on the committee be appointed. The inspector, Mr. A. E. Sayers, who has served on the committee, was appointed as the second council representative on the committee.

The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, asked the council to cooperate, in celebrating the King’s silver jubilee, and the, council decided to call a public meeting to go into details.

The Windsor Park Society was given a lease of the unformed part of Juliet Street on the north bank of the Patea River at a peppercorn rental in order that the. society might complete its scheme to beautify the surrounding area. The foreman, Mr. R. Richards, reported that Miranda Street was remetalled and bitumen grouted from Page Street to Opunake Road. Cordelia Street was top-dressed with bitumen, and Opunake Road with- chips from Fenton Street to Regan Street. That completed all work authorised for the tarring season. fine shingle. The Cordelia Street swing bridge was thoroughly overhauled and the approaches improved. Twelve relief workers were engaged on formation work in Hamlet Street south.

The willows growing near the ford in King Edward Park had been cut down and driftwood brought down by the recent floods cleared away, reported the domain caretaker, Mr. E. P. Blanchard. The damaged bridge near the children’s swimming pool had been repaired. The report submitted by the electrical inspector, Sir. A. E. Pollock, stated that the flood lighting system in Victoria Park was completed and adjusted. It had •• been used on several occasions and proved very satisfactory. Attention was given to securing satisfactory earth tests at transformer and lightning arresters. New transformers had come to hand; and one had been erected at the Cloton Road sub-station. This sub-station, had been totally re-wired and would with a normal increase in load give excellent service for a number of years to come. On several places on the lines trees had to be cut back, and this had been attended to. Units purchased for the month totalled 191,600, against 185,700 for the cor- < responding period of last year, an increase of 5900. The peak load registered was 423 k.v.a. against 410 for • the same month of 1934, an increase of 13 k.v.a«
