YOUNG DRIVER KILLED
COLLISION AT HAMILTON
FINNED IN OVERTURNED LORRY.
CAR OCCUPANTS’ LUCKY ESCAPE.
SOMERSAULT AND TOTAL SMASH.

Hamilton, Last Night.
One man was killed and four other motorists were injured yesterday afternoon in a collision at the corner of Galloway Street and Cambridge Road between a heavy motor truck laden with drums of petrol, and a touring car returning from a funeral at the Hamilton East Cemetery. The victim was a young man named Gillies, son of a garage proprietor of that name at Taupo, aged 20 years.. The injured were: Patrick Shivnan, severe cuts, abrasions and shock; Edward F. O’Neill, cuts, bruises and severe shock; John Shivnan, shock and abrasions; John Murphy, shock and abrasions. The truck, rated at 4| tons, was owned by Mr. Gillies, motor service station proprietor at Taupo, and was returning south with a consignment of 200 gallons of petrol in drums when the accidr.nt occurred. The car driver, Mr. John Shivnan, was emerging from Galloway Street and the impact occurred on the crown of the road. The two vehicles met with terrific force and the car was struck squarely on the left hand side and thrown high into the air, somersaulting several times before coming to rest with a wheel on a strip of lawn 20 yards from the point of impact. The motor-truck, of which the young man was the sole occupant, mounted the footpath and overturned. The driver was pinned in the cab and suffered extensive head injuries. He died before his admission to the Waikato hospital. The four occupants of the car had a remarkable escape from serious injury. The truck was not severely damaged but the car was a total loss. The occupants of the motor-car are reported to be in a satisfactory condition.
