EXCITING CONTESTS
LABOUR TUG-OF-WAR TOURNEY. HAUPOTO TEAM WINS FINAL. A tug-of-war competition held in conjunction with the Labour Party bazaar and carnival at the Workers’ Social Hall, New Plymouth, was concluded on Saturday night. The first pull was a challenge for the Chum Roberts Challenge Cup between Diamonds, the holder, and West End. Diamonds won by three inches after an exciting pull.. Watersiders defeated Pirates by one inch after a pull in which each team held the advantage alternately until the last minute, when Watersiders gained an inch and held it until the bell rang. Diamonds (one life) after a very exciting contest defeated Oaonui by three inches. Oaonui gained an initial advantage of two inches and increased it until only one minute was to go, but Diamonds by shock tactics gained the advantage and held it. Oaonui was eliminated. Haupoto then ’defeated ’Watersiders by five inches and met Diamonds in the final.
Haupoto gained a two inches advantage and worked to five inches. With a minute to go Diamonds by hard work had regained three inches. Haupoto, however, was too strong and won. Mr. E. R. C. Gilmour congratulated the .winner’ and the runner-up, and both captain’s replied. Mr. Gilmour presented the-Roberts Cup and congratulated the organisers of the tournament on the efficiency of their work. He expressed a hope that this contest would be only the forerunner of, many others. Mr. S. Flood replied.
. An impromptu dance was held at the conclusion of the tug-of-war, the Royal Maori string band supplying the music. Mr. P. Draper was master of ceremonies. A competition was won by Mr. W. Falconer.
