“LUCKY NUMBERS”

THIRTEENTH DAY AT RACES. WINNERS SIXES. AND SEVENS. Saturday, the day of the Taranaki Jockey Club’s special race meeting, was the 13th day of the month, and this in the minds of the superstitious should have put them on their guard. The day was a disastrous one for punters. Nevertheless 'those who have a “kink” for lucky numbers might have foreseen the future, with happy results. April is the fourth month of the year, and the year is 1935. Of all these numbers, 4,1, 9,3, 5, there are only two other singular numbers whose total will make the allegedly ...uplucky number 13, and they are Six and seven. These two proved \the “lucky” numbers of the day as the following will show. ' -

Of the seven horses whose number appeared opposite the number- six, three were relieved of their engagements but the remaining four, Colossal, Autumn Leaf, Merry Way and The Tiger, all filled places, Colossal and Merry Way winning and the other pair paying dividends on the place machine. On the place machine the bettor would have invested £4 for. a return of ' £l2 Ils, while on the straight-out machine a like investment would have brought, him back £l2 4s. Anyone who had invested £1 both ways on number six in each race would have finished thie day some £l6 15s to the good. Number seven, though not quite so consistent, was equally “lucky,” especially for backers on the straight-out machine. Horses carrying this number started in all the seven events. They claimed three winners’ Winsoreen, Trishna and Refresher, and placed horses in Harvest Moon and Aussie Ra. An- investment of £1 on each straight-out would have entailed an outlay of £7 to gain a return of £27 19s, while on the place ride £6 invested would have brought back £ll 9s. A speculation of £1 both ways on every number seven would have returned a profit of £26 Bs. In all an investment of £1 both ways on every horse carrying numbers six and seven saddle cloths would have netted a profit of £43 2s,
