DEATH OF MR. JAMES RODIE.
ONCE HAWERA STATIONMASTER.
There died, at Hawera at an early hour yesterday morning Mr. James Rodie, who was for a number of years before his retirement about 12 years ago stationmaster at Hawera. Of Scottish descent, Mr. Rodie spent about 40 years in New Zealand as a railwayman. He joined the service m the South Island, coming later to the North Island, where he held important positions and was for some years before coining to Hawera stationed at Wanganui, while he carried out relieving duties at various centres. At the conclusion of his service at Hawera, where he retired from the service, he was honoured at a public gathering in the railway social hall. Trib- , utes to his popularity and his thoroughness were paid by representatives of all sections of the community, and presentations were made by the business people and other organisations and sections pf the community with which he had closely associated as stationmaster. could not have been more honoured and respected if he had been the King,” said one Hawera business man who had been closely associated with Mr. Rodie. Since his retirement Mr. Rodie had lived quietly at Hawera. His health had been failing for some years, but it was only within the past fortnight that he was seriously ill. He leaves a widow and two sons, Messrs. J. Rodie (Manaia) and F. A. Rodie (New Plymouth). Mr. D. Rodie, who recently retired from a high railway position, is a brother.
