CHANGE IN PAYMENT

RELIEF WORKERS IN COUNTRY. ON SAME SCALE AS HAWERA. From April 29 relief workers resident in districts surrounding Hawera and under the control of the Hawera Unemployment Committee will be paid on the same scale as applies to workers resident in the town, according to advice received on Saturday 5y Mr. J. H. Fletcher, postmaster. It is understood the Unemployment Board’s decision, as communicated to Mr. Fletcher, follows representations recently made by the Hawera Unemployed Workers’ Association. The decision will principally affect workers resident at Ohawe, Normanby and Okaiawa, and will make some difference in payment. ' The association’s criticisms of the differentiation of payment. have been chiefly concerned with the fact that owing to the workers being under the control of the Hawera committee they have been allocated to work in and around Hawera and have be»n faced with transport charges for which they have received no repayment It has been felt by members of the association that the least that could be done was to place the men on the same scale as Hawera, if only to give adequate ■recompense for charges necessarily made .upon the funds of workers in transportation costs. ' •* / Some time ago Mr. W. W. Cousins, then secretary to the association, addressed a petition to the Unemployment Board on behalf of the country workers, and from Mr. C. A. Wilkinson, M.P., by whom the petition was presented, advice was received that local officers had certain rights in the matter. The decision most recently made is therefore an outcome of Mr. Cousins’ representations. WHAKAMARA TENNIS. END OF SEASON PLAY.
