SEATS ON LOCAL BODIES

CONTESTS AT STRATFORD ELECTION CERTAIN IN ALL CASES. REVIEW OF THE NOMINATIONS. The local body elections on May 8 will see changed personnels on the Stratford County ’ Council, Stratford Borough Council and Stratford Hospital Board through the withdrawal of present members. 'As far as could be ascertained yesterday it is only in the case of the hospital board that contests for seats are definitely assured. Vacancies caused by present members of the county and borough councils withdrawing have not so far attracted more than one nomination for each seat. The two members of the New Plymouth Harbour Board, Messrs. D. J. Malone, Stratford, and H. C. Taylor, Ngaere, will offer their services again, and no opponents for their seats have been mentioned. There is every indication that the Mayor, Mr. J. W. McMillan, will be returned without opposition. It was rumoured that the deputy-mayor, Dr. W. P. P. Gordon, would come out for the mayoralty, but he definitely denied the suggestion yesterday, though he will seek re-election to the council. Mr. P. Thomson, who was mayor before Mr. McMillan’s election at the last poll, stated yesterday that' he would not stand owing to the fact that since last election his duties as chairman of the No. 5 Transport Licensing Authority had made such inroads on his time that he could not consider standing.

The borough councillor who definitely will not stand again is Cr. R. E. Carryer, and he is the only one to make that announcement, though Crs. C. H. Speck and R. R. Curtis are doubtful. Cr. Speck would make no reply when taxed with the rumour that he would not stand again, while Cr. Curtis said he had not decided. “Probably I will stand,” was his qualification. Crs. R. F. Harkness, W. P. P. Gordon, A. H. Trotter, C. R. Finnerty and A. H. Nelson will contest their seats qgain. CONSIDERABLE INTEREST.

The numerous controversies at Stratford regarding the hospital board’s policy during the past year have aroused considerable interest in the election, yet as far as can be gathered there will be few seats strongly contested. With one exception all the present board will stand again, and there are two other names, not yet definite, mentioned as possible nominations. The exception, which is one of importance, is the chairman, Mr. W. L. Kennedy, who has represented the Whangamomona county on the Stratford board for many years and who has now announced his retirement. 'The Stratford county representatives, Mrs. D. Shannon, Messrs. T. R. Anderson, H. C. Taylor, G. P. Harkness and M. Gemhoefer, are all prepared to stand again, as are the Stratford borough representatives, Mrs. M. T. Phillips and Mr. J. Cormibk. . It is understood Mrs. Harkness may have an opponent at Midhirst, though nothing has been announced yet. In the borough Mr. E. S. Rutherfurd will probably contest the election with Mrs. Phillips and Mr. Cornuck. While a number of other names have been connected by current rumour with the election and the hospital board, the persons concerned all denied any intention of standing when approached yesterday. Two of the seats on the Stratford County Council will be left open by the decision of the present members, Crs. T. T. Murray, Toko, and E. W. Hancock, Cardiff, not to seek election. Cr. Murray has private reasons for his withdrawal, while Cr. Hancock expects to leave the Stratford district soon. The chairman, Cr. T. Anderson, Mahoe, will stand again for the council and the hospital board,, and Mr. H. C. Taylor, Ngaere, for the council, hospital board and harbour board. Crs. S. Pitt, Stratford, W. H. Were, Toko, G. H. Rawlinson, Matau, C. Skitrop, Puniwhakau, and J. C. Best, Pukengahu, will definitely be in the field, as will Cr. W. Vickers, Midhirst, “as far as he knows.” Mr. P. Morrissey, Waingongoro Road, Cardiff, will stand in Cr. Hancock’s place, and so far appears to be the only contender. Nobody has yet been mentioned for the east riding seat to be vacated by Cr. Murray.

Wheeler and Woolsey, the two inimitable comedians, present a broadside of laughs and ludicrous situations in “Cockeyed Cavaliers,” the picture to be screened to-night and to-morrow night at the Eltham Theatre. Wheeler is seen as a medieval vagabond whose kleptomaniac tendencies lead him and his partner into a maze of misunderstandings and .misfortunes that Woolsey endeavours to straighten out in hilarious fashion. The singing, dancing, romancing, and joking is done in early European costume against medieval backgrounds, but the comedy is up-to-date. Features of the production are the music and the theme songs “I went hunting” and “I love to dilly dally.” There is a very varied, array of featurettes, including a. re-issue of Charlie Chaplin’s comedy “The Adventurer,”
